A young man with three college degrees and a genius IQ teams up with an established serial killer.

An established serial killer still has family values. He even has a favorite little daughter. But he is also capable of killing them.

One author who I found slightly similar was Mo Hayder, but I did not enjoy the characters in her books as much as Logan Mcrae and D.I. Steel ;-)

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys and girls.

Hello

I've been (and still is) a great fan of books written by James Hadley Chase but unfortunately i recently finished the last one and, literally knowing them all by heart thus not finding any sense in reading them again (for now), decided to pick up a different author.

I checked a couple books of relatively random authors i again randomly picked from the web basing on some books description and reviews (last one was Dark Passage by David Goodis) but honestly found them unintersting due to lack of attention to small details of the plot and enviroment ( like well made description of the area where the actions of the current novel take place or simply lack of details of any character appearance). After books of Chase where every character was alive due to great description of character, feelings, fate and history - everything after i checked was really boring alright, like you reading something about someone who has no face.

Please suggest me any authors which are more or less similat to works of Chase?

P.S. Do not suggest Chandler and Hammet to me pls, i know and read them alright. They are great too.

Basically, L.A. Confidential, White Jazz and American Tabloid of three of my all time favourite novels. I read crime fiction widely, but struggle to find anything that (for me, given my taste) can compare. And, bottom line, I find myself unable to read Ellroy's more recent work because of THAT STYLE!

Seems to me that Ellroy's style is his great achilles heal. I made it halfway through The Cold 6K and couldn't go on. I couldn't make it through the first few pages of Blood's A Rover. Then, before Perfidia came out, I read the Shakedown novella. The style here is, to my taste, very good: nice balanced sentences; stripped and immediate, with impact, but fluid, readable, variable.

I hoped Perfidia would be the same, but no. We're back to short sentences – or rather, short sentences together with occasional longer sentences, which amount to three short sentences broken up with listing commas. We don't see commas other than listing commas. And it is all so repetitive! Short sentence, short sentence, longer sentence with listing commas, short sentence, repeat, repeat!

It is possible to write stripped, high impact prose without extreme punctuation; to write in a way that ADAPTs the prose and to suit character mood, or situation, or the level of emphasis/impact desired in the specific instance. I wish someone could convince Ellroy of that **sigh**.

Anyway, your thoughts? Any suggestions re. authors of a similar calibre?

I recently discovered Jonathan Valin, author of the Harry Stoner mystery series. I'm in the middle of SECOND CHANCE (1991) and loving it so far.

From what I understand he wrote about 14 novels, but stopped around the mid 90s. Shame, because he's a strong writer. I'm from Cinci, which is where Valin sets his series, so it's great to read the local flavor.

Where and why did you buy that book?tag:crimespace.ning.com,2014-08-02:537324:Topic:3954452014-08-02T20:34:58.890ZRichard Krausshttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/RichardKrauss

We can debate whether promotion, word-of-mouth or shopping makes the difference. But why not record what actually happened and over time discover the different ways we are connected to the books we buy? And since most of us (I think) buy more than we can actually read, let’s confine this thread to buying behavior.

I received his novel, "Target Lancer" in my book bag at LCC Monterey. I've never heard of this author, Max Allan Collins, totally off my radar. The book is fact-based about an attempt on JFK's life in Chicago, weeks before Dallas. Jack Ruby, Oswald and Jimmy Hoffa are all characters. Collins writes noir and reads like Chandler. He also wrote "Road To Perdition." I'm going to look for the one about Marilyn Monroe.

Any comments? Anyone a fan?
