Just got the news. It looks like I need a publisher again. I haven't quite absorbed the implications of this, and I'm sitting here looking rather foolishly at the notes for the nearly finished manuscript of novel number eight. Number seven is still unpublished, and I'm being told that I need to write a different series if I want to sell any more of my work. Pity poor Akitada, cut off before his prime.

Any publishers out there who'd like to continue the series???

Sorry to hear this, IJ. Best of luck finding a new publisher or with a new series.
That's harsh news.

I hope you find a new publisher soon, hopefully one that knows how to market the books better.

Good luck.
Oh my. This is unpleasant news indeed, not just to you, but to fans. Will #7 be the last in the series?

With Akitada you've brought something extraordinary to the table. To ask that you bring out another great series seems a bit unrealistic, but if anyone can do it, you can. Still, let's not say Akitada's dead yet. He's already found a second home. There's a chance he'll find a third.
Thank you, Steven. Your support always means an awful lot to me. And you also know how the business works. No, only six novels will be in print. Number seven was ready to go, and a short story collection is also finished. Number eight is almost done.
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! I know it won't make you feel any better, but I know an author who hit the NYTimes list with his second novel. # 3 apparently did okay, but when he turned in his fourth to his editor, his editor said it was the best thing he'd ever written, then passed, citing sales numbers that were trending down. If that's not evidence that this is a crazy, short-sighted business, I don't know what is.

I agree with Steven - this is terrible and completely unfair - BUT - you can reinvent yourself and carry on. You did it once, you can do it again. Best wishes.
Ah, Christ! That's just lovely news. I'd say you find the publisher yourself. One that's maybe smaller in size but definitely more receptive to your style of writing. I wouldn't give up on Akitada. Not yet at least.
Aw, man! Just when I was getting into it. Sorry, I.J.
Gambatte kudasai!
Thank you all. Well, I'm not giving up. I love the writing part. The economy is bad, and that affects publishing also, sometimes months later, since books are in preparation for as much as a year.

I'll be looking for a small publisher to carry on, this because I do have people asking for the next book. I'm also putting a historical novel on POD/Kindle. Another mystery/thriller with a different background will have to be marketed by me.

And then I'm supposed to come up with a new series for my agent. I may be busier than ever.

Your comments have meant a lot to me. I decided to post because this kind of news is one of the realities of the publishing scene and serves as informational material. Other announcements I'll put on BLOG.
I am sorry to hear this. I read one of the books a while back because I had seen you on this site, and I have the latest published book on on my TBR shelf. Best of luck in finding a new publisher.
Thanks, Joe. That's very kind.
Yeow! I'm sorry to hear this.
