It has been brought to my attention that I'm the only person on the planet who hasn't seen the tv show 'The Wire. Is this true? Are there any more wireless people out there?
THE WIRE is available on DVD through NetFlix. My Beloved Spousal Equivalent bought me the full set for Christmas, and we're just about finished with Season 4, after having discovered the series at about the same point and playing catch up. Truly must see TV for anyone interested in contemporary crime fiction that is more than cobs and robbers. Possibly the best television series I've ever seen.
Once you've watched all five seasons of The Wire, and still want more, you might want to check out "The Corner." It's an earlier miniseries for HBO that was also produced by David Simon, and it's available on DVD. The Corner is also set in Baltimore and covers the culture of drug dealers and users. It isn't as expansive as The Wire, but it's just as powerful.
THE CORNER is on our netFlix list. I read the book a couple of years ago, and have wanted to watch the mini-series ever since, but we're going to need some time after THE WIRE to relax a little.
I haven't seen The Wire, either...no HBO. I do have Netflix, however so I think I'll order this while waiting for season three of Dexter to come available. Thanks for the tip.
For people who haven't seen it, THE WIRE reminds many viewers of the old network TV show, HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET. Both shows are set in Baltimore, both deal realistically (I guess) with race, drugs, criminals, and the police, and both shows depend on strongly-written character relationships to create tension, not just violence. Be warned, though. People die.
