This should pretty much settle it. You don’t have half an hour to invest in making a handful of these to be used at your convenience, you probably don’t manage your time well enough to manage my career. (This is the Gmail example; I think all email programs have something similar.)<br />
<br />
1. Open your Gmail<br />
2. At the very top left side, click on the "more" link<br />
3. At the bottom of that menu, click on "even more"<br />

7. The first selection is "Canned Responses"<br />
8. Click on enable<br />
9. It will open another Gmail window, but I just closed that one<br />
10. Go back to your Gmail window<br />
11. Click on Compose Mail to start a new email<br />
12. Underneath the subject line, see a selection for Canned responses<br />
13. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY CLEAR SCREEN. NO SIGNATURES. NOTHING.<br />
14. Click on Canned Responses<br />
15. In the box that appears, give your new canned response a name<br />
16. Type in the text of your canned response<br />
17. Click on Canned Responses again<br />
18. Click SAVE to save your new Canned Response<br />
19. Discard that email<br />
20. Open a new email<br />
21. Your canned response will always appear at the very top of any new email.<br />

I can beat that. Last spring I received a request for a full from a publisher that had rejected the query nine months earlier. Please doing business with those kinds of folks.

As if it even matters. What's it their business if you are querying someone else? Put an offer down and we'll talk. Otherwise, get real.<br />
<br />
My other favorite is the "We want you to be exclusive with us" bit at the query stage. Not the full request, the <i>query</i>. Am I supposed to hold off querying everyone else for 9 months while you figure it out?

I just received a rejection letter a couple days ago from a publisher I queried last October. Only took 9 months.<br />
<br />
So what's better? Not getting a reply or that?

Yet The Maass Agency responds to every query, Jack. It's professional courtesy. I agree with Dana. I would not submit to an agent or publisher who does not at least respond with a form rejection.

I think this has been mentioned elsewhere, but another head-scratcher for me is when they ask if you are submitting your query elsewhere. For a full submission, this question makes sense. But for a query? yikes!

I've made my own rule. If a publisher's web site says they're too busy to respond unless they're interested, I do them the favor of not adding to their workload and don't submit. Now everyone's happy.<br />
<br />
And I swear on a stack of Bibles, if I ever get a deal and an agent approaches me about representation, I won't work with them if they have this rule. I hope I'm tested on this someday.

I think it's sad that a person's basic personality can be set on "rude". The industry shouldn't have to develop a code of conduct; it should not have to change to accomodate a minority of people who consider others to have no value. How hard is it to respect that someone has taken the time and effort to write up a submission? It might not be a very good submission, but a little common curtesy isn't hard to fake even if the agent doesn't consider the writer as "worthy" of their time.<br />

PS - if the agent is "too busy" to read submissions, what are they doing? Selling stories? Schmoozing publishers? They better bloody well be, otherwise there's no excuse for it. For that matter - the bastard had better be living it up in a penthouse manor with a dozen servants and restaurant-style chefs on staff. Otherwise there's no excuse to alienate the person or persons whose hard work may be contributing to your yearly income.
