Another female view of Salander:
PS: I never "liked" Hannibal Lechter, I just think he is one of the most interesting characters in recent fiction. (OK, define recent ... Last 20 years.)

I like snappy and economical too. This might be why I've had trouble getting through it, but as I said earlier today. I might actually give it another try.

He inordinately has the ability to write in a female voice, that's for sure. He is also very descriptive etc. He is the epitome of a literary fiction writer, long winded, slow moving plots, in-depth scene and character development and so on. Boring stuff for the non literary types like myself. I like what I read to be snappy and economical.

I suppose I must have, but I don't recall enough to critique it. I liked ANNA KARENINA. What is most vivid in my memory is a novella: "The Death of Ivan Ilych," maybe because I took the trouble to read this with attention in order to teach it. The effort was enormously rewarding.
Tolstoy is very good indeed.

This is off the topic, but I think I will start a discussion about who read "War and Peace" and what did they see that made it a classic?

Tolstoy was toilsome and boring. Reading Anna Karenina was work, War and Peace was just that, a war within myself, to bring myself to read it, and peace of mind knowing that once I am done reading it, I can say I've read the revered and ubiquitous War and Peace.

I like Lizbeth. I think her character is interesting.

But that's the task of a writer: To make characters interesting. Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn is peopled with great characters. Andrew Vachss recently completed Burke series, too, was similarly populated by outstandingly unique characters. Ditto Gischler's Gun Monkeys and Pistol Poets.

But the story needs to fuel the character's actions and what we find interesting about them then explains their actions.…
