Robert Boris Riskin has been writing fiction most of his adult life. He went to the University of Michigan where he studied playwriting with Kenneth Rowe, but switched to fiction shortly thereafter. He did the usual stint at helping his writing career by working at a variety of jobs from dishwasher to busboy to factory worker to selling discounted clothes to high fashion women. He has published short stories in The New Yorker and a variety of literary magazines.
A Brooklyn native, he has traveled the world. He lived in France for a few years. One of those years was spent studying at the Sorbonne. The other was on a honeymoon. But New York is where his heart is, as well as the food, family, friends, and the ocean.
He moved to the suburbs with his wife, Kiki, a sculptor. They have a daughter and son. They eventually discovered Sag Harbor at the eastern end of Long Island where the bay and ocean are nearby and the air is filled with creativity.
There's no way I can list them because I've got so many but I'll liost a few: Serious: Tolstoy, Checkhov, Thomas Mann, Conrad, IB Singer, and Saul Bellow's The Adventures of Augie March.
Crime and Suspense: I go with the classics: Chandler, Ross MacDonald, James M Cain, Eric Ambler. Modern: I like Michael Connelly (who doesn't?), Robert Crais, Lawrene Block, Ed McBain, Tony Hillerman, Ian Rankin, Reginald Hill, and the Swedish master, Henning Mankell.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
On TV I am addicted to Law and Order re-runs, Seinfeld re-runs, and not much else besides the news. Sometimes I watch a "Raymond re-run. I don't watch American Idol, game shows, Judge shows, Reality shows. In fact I hate them.
I love movies, sometimes even bad ones. I go for adventure, noir, sex (not explicit, just hot), comedy, if the dialogue is sharp, not Dumb and Dumber.
One of my all time favorite movies is Some Like it Hot. another is
Rear Window, Another is Love in the Afternoon (not well known but one of Gary Cooper's best).
Your list of favorite authors, movies, and TV shows could be transplanted to my page without changing a thing. You have excellent tastes, Robert. Thanks for adding me as a friend.
Hi Robert - like Jeff, I love your list of favourite films. Haven't seen Love In The Afternoon for years - what a great film. Audrey Hepburn is wonderful in that too. I take it that like me you are a big Billy Wilder fan! Nice to meet you and thanks for the add.
Thanks for stopping by my space to chat Robert. I see from your bio that we have quite a bit in common: favorite authors, fleeting careers, time in New York and France. I hope we'll cross paths and have the chance to speak further.
