I worked as an Executive Editor at Entertainment Weekly for 11 years and (in two separate stints) at People magazine and people.com for 12 years. I often speak to young journalists and try to use myself as an example for inspiration—a guy who spent time in jail, rehab and a psych ward and somehow went on to become a successful editor at Time Inc. and managed to keep himself sane and alive. I’ve tried to reflect those experiences in my books.
Elmore Leonard, P.G. Wodehouse, David Mamet, Flannery O'Connor, Italo Calvino, Willy Shakespeare, William Faulkner, Italo Svevo, Richard Price, James Ellroy, Muriel Spark, Lee Child, Carlos Fuentes.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
Dexter, True Blood, Homicide, The Third Man, Law & Order (all versions), Boardwalk Empire, Bored To Death, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, Hung, Mad Men, Performance, 8 1/2, Chimes At Midnight, Rules Of The Game, Touch Of Evil, Little Murders, There Will Be Blood, Fargo, No Country For Old Men, all Marx Bros. movies from The Coconuts to A Night At The Opera (and nothing after that), most W.C. Fields movies.
Hi Richard,
I write in 3 genres so I concentrate on one particular genre at a time, marketing myself and that book. My BLOG was rated #51 in Australia. Check out my BLOG post ... Build your Writers Platform @ http://www.karentyrrell.com/
PS I will need to catch the new Dexter series.
Glad to be on board, Richard. I'll be reading you with interest. That's a warehoue and two sheds' worth of life experience you have there. Can't beat the variation in informing our fiction, even if the experience is a cold one. Any thanks.
