Chandler, of course, and current guys such as Victor Gischler. I still have huge gaps in my reading, and am only reading The Postman Always Rings Twice for the first time.

Mauritz Hansen: The murder of Machinebuilder Rolfsen (1839) - But it's stretching it a bit, I think. Poe did something completely different with the mystery and investigation in Rue Morgue. - Still we have some good writers, and some bad killers. If you're looking for the first kind, try Jo Nesbø, Kjell Ola Dahl and Karin Fossum.
