Sandra Ruttan's What Burns Within is a Must Read

I haven't been reading much because pregnancy is taking its toll and this book has been on my to be read pile for a while. Well it was well worth the wait. Ruttan excels at writing a crime procedural that twists and turns and is a page-turner. What I love most about her is characters are full of integrity, but she also livens things up with complicated sub-characters who act as villains and propel the action forward. It's also peppered through with social commentary as the characters interact… Continue

Baby Shark's High Plains Redemption by Robert Fate

I first discovered Robert Fate via a Spinetingler review and have been enjoying the series since. In this latest installment Kristin and her partner Otis are at work on a strange case that seems to throw a curve ball at every turn.

In this latest installment Fate peels back the psychological layers. Kristin's identity as Baby Shark was forged during a brutal rape and the… Continue

Before I Die by Jenny Downham

I just read this book and am in complete awe of the author's talent. I saw this book in the bookstore and was intrigued by the title and it's placing in the young adult section. I started thinking-is this really written from the perspective of a dying person, a dying young person. I picked it up and read the first few sentences for the blurb (I don't like to know… Continue

The burden of unique names

There's a trend that's been pissing me off no end and inspired by this article I thought I'd get if off my chest. I work in a community health centre and among the services we provide is Maternal Child Health. As parents come in to see the nurse, I tick off their name that they have arrived and as result I get to see the new trend of giving children a 'unique' name.

In most instances this involves giving the child… Continue

Advice for unpublished writers: My successful query letter

Josephine Damian who is on my daily must read blog roll did a post about query letters. She referenced an agent who says he's been receiving terrible query letters and this is possibly due to the e-query process. In the comments I wrote an essay-long comment and thought I'd post my query letter in case anyone can get any use out of… Continue

Amra, I was on the fence about joining here - myspace is time demand enough, but after signing up for DorothyL and the yahoo short mystery group, I decided now that I have a short break between semesters, I had time to get started here.

I guess getting a crime story published made me realize I could belong here with "writer" status as opposed to a wanna-be.

Hi Amra

Great to see another Melbourne writer on here. Fantastic that you have a novel coming out with Text. A friend of mine, Beth Montgomery, was the first author for young adults to be published with them, last year (The Birthmark).

Glad you liked Bob Fate's book. He's my neighbor and we often run into each other in the neighborhood as well as at Mystery Writers of America meetings and other such places. He's a good guy. I liked his book plenty too.
