C.M. Albrecht replied to Jack Getze's discussion Henry Miller's Writing Tips
"I think somebody has Henry Miller mixed up with Arthur Miller. Both were good writers, but in my opinion, Henry Miller was one of the most absolutely honest writers I've ever read. One thing I learned from Mr. Miller: when it comes to writing,…"

C.M. Albrecht replied to Conrad Johnson's discussion Better to be here than in jail
"I just saw an old Lon Chaney and Joan Crawford silent. To evade John Law, he hid in a circus and pretended to be an armless man. Did a great job too without FX and could even light cigarets with his feet and everything. But his fate was worse than…"

C.M. Albrecht replied to Jed Power's discussion Opinion on this please
"I agree with Ms Parker. I've never done a signing for several reasons. Mostly because I'm sadly very shy about promoting me stuff, but I have tried.  The only really independent bookstore in my area gave me the brushoff because of the…"

C.M. Albrecht replied to Brian Hoffman's discussion This blog has blogged down
"I'd be wary of too much re-writing on spec. I sent a "great" crime script (based upon one of my books) to a "producer". He loved it and we conferenced on the phone several times and I thought this was IT. But then he came…"

C.M. Albrecht replied to Jed Power's discussion Opinion on this please
"Personally I wouldn't do business with a store with that hard-line attitude. It's obvious they're taking advantage of hopeful authors. They have nothing at all to lose and you have very little (if anything) to gain by tying up your…"

I. J. Parker commented on C.M. Albrecht's blog post Book Promotion
"Penguin was on the whole very cooperative.  It was St. Martin's that didn't bother to help me with local books stores, turning B&N down until I made an effort to get them to OK it. As for reviews: the downside is that few papers…"

"I.J., thanks.  Sounds to me like what C.M. is saying is so true.  It definitely jives with what I've been seeing and absorbing about the trend by publishers to have authors do it all, in addition to writing the…"

"Thanks for the info about signings. I have a feeling a signing wouldn't help a lot and didn't like the idea anyway bcause to be truthful I have a condition with my hand so that it's almost impossible for me to write anything…"

I. J. Parker commented on C.M. Albrecht's blog post Book Promotion
"Well, Mary, since I've balked at doing their publicity work for them, I can only say that they started by wanting me to do it all. That is, book signings, travel, etc. SMP didn't even arrange my B&N signings. And B&N wouldn't…"

Mary McFarland commented on C.M. Albrecht's blog post Book Promotion
"C.M., I agree.  Small publishers should provide an advertising budget and identify in writing the strategy and the amount they'll use to help sell your book (I'm hoping I.J. will help me answer this: do they?).  That…"

"I agree. In my case I don't know what an advance is, small or large. But if an advance were involved, I'd be happy to forego it in favor of some publicity."

Movies And TV Shows I Like:
The film that gave me most trouble and thought was: L'Affiare Dominici, starring Jean Gabin, 1973. To me, very troubling, and the crime was never really solved to the satisfaction of all. I have my own theory that works for me, but if you get a chance, watch the film.

Book Promotion

Recently my contract with a publisher was coming to term and I decided not to renew it. Sales were non-existent, and aside from that, I just wasn't happy with certain aspects of my novel (my fault). The cover didn't appeal to me either. I explained this to my publisher.

The 29 Year Old Novel

Way way back, somewhere around 1980, I developed an idea for a mystery novel. I've always loved mysteries, and for years, I’d wanted to write a mystery of my own. Time went by however, and other things always prevented my getting started.

But this time it was different. I really liked my idea, and I was actually being paid (in a roundabout way). I wrote the first draft of what would become “The Albemarle Affair” during my paid lunch breaks at work. I drank more coffee than Balzac and… Continue
