Why would the cover say Sharon was "implcated in Jake's death" when she wasn't? It almost put me off reading the book. After THE CHESHIRE CAT'S EYE, I went on to GAMES TO KEEP THE DARK AWAY. A poetic title which never clicks with any specific part…

I went back to the first Sharon McCone, EDWIN OF THE IRON SHOES. It's hard to believe it's the beginning, Marcia Muller's first novel according to her website, because the writing and Sharon are both maturely developed. Muller relies on her characte…

LOCKED IN by Marcia Muller. I just intended to sample it as I settled in for the night, but ended up finishing it at 1:30 AM. Emotionally involving. There was one spot where I was laughing and crying at the same time. Sharon McCone, free spirited o…

I stopped by for a chat with Kate Shugak. THE SINGING OF THE DEAD and A FINE AND BITTER SNOW. Word is Dana Stabenow finally found someone willing to film the series in Alaska, so she has sold the movie rights. How anything could equal the books I do…

I enjoyed Dick & Felix Francis's DEAD HEAT, but am having trouble starting the next one SILKS due to the idea of an attorney subject to extortion by a plausible psychopath. Instead, I picked out Janwillem van de Wetering's THE MIND-MURDERS from my…

Seemed to me I.J. basically said she switched to Anchee Min because she preferred it. That's a compliment.

PRENTICE ALVIN, 3rd in the Alvin Maker series. This is as far as I've gotten in the series before, and this time I'm determined to get through it all. I loved SEVENTH SON, but the next two books take a considerably darker view of people.

Charlaine Harris's Aurora Teagarden series. Very cozy mysteries, no supernatural. I enjoyed the first one, REAL MURDERS, without getting excited about it. A BONE TO PICK kept me awake most of the night to finish it. Cozies rarely have a breathtaking…

Hi, TJ. My dragon is an avatar done by Brian Wilson. Thank you, I love it, too.

I haven't brought a book of my own to publication stage. I only publish other people's books. We like books that stand out as individuals, and give pleasure in the reading. We look for quality, not selling trends. The reason I'm here so rarely, right now, is that I'm editing like mad to get as many books as possible ready for our late September opening.

I absolutely love the cover of that book! I love dragons anyway. Do you publish only your on books, or books of others?

Well, thanks. You are too nice to me. Actually, when you are published with a major house and you have a top agent, you have to meet sales expectations that may be unrealistic. Especially when there is no promotion by the publisher. Word of mouth is very slow. Publishers like quick results. But I am immensely grateful to those readers who keep clamoring for more and who come back faithfully and preorder months ahead of release dates.

Poor sales? You?? I hear too much enthusiastic word-of-mouth about your books for you to have poor sales.

Are you saying that great reviews mean poor sales? That would explain it.

It is readers' instincts that decide whether they will enjoy a book, so editors need to learn first and foremost to listen to those instincts in themselves, to keep them in practice. Reviewers, too. We hear continual complaints that if reviewers like a book, readers know they will dislike it. That's because too many reviewers are listening to their intellects instead of their instincts.

I hear ya re. editing while reading. On the one hand, I learn a lot. On the other, I've got a lot less patience than when I read just for fun.

Angie. Thanks for the welcome. I noticed that he mentioned a Portland setting for his book. Only Portlanders do that. ;-)

Once I get my life back in balance, I hope to have time for pleasure reading again! What is life without wandering through somebody else's story without a care in the world?

(Except, now that I'm in the habit, I instinctively edit everything I read. Need to ease up on that.)

What (My) Life is all about

In most parts of life it was a struggle to find my place, but in the evenings I fell into reviewing, fell into webmistressing, and fell into editing. There they were, waiting for me. While I was editing a series of short story anthologies for inexperienced writers (which I still do), I realized that there are a lot of people with fresh ideas who either haven't been able to break into fiction publishing,
