When Heroes Go Down: Donald E Westlake

(cross posted from the blog)

Donald E Westlake, one of my favorite writers, has died.

I actually kind of stunned by this. It’s really the opposite of a surprise, given the man’s age (Westlake was 75.) but still. This was someone who, whilst I’ve never met, I find that I have an emotional investment in.

Damn.

My first column for ‘The Hub’ was already going to be on the enduring appeal of the ‘Parker’… Continue

2009: Goodbye To All That

(cross posted from the blog)

It’s 2009.

2008 was a weird, bad year. I started it living in a welsh coastal town (the second of my two years there as a student, attempting to find work in the summers was brutal.) and ended it living in Manchester, a city that’s very dear to my heart.

Two weeks ago I found out that I’m overwhelmingly likely to have to drop out of University, due to funding issues that… Continue

Blog Overhaul

Hi,

Of possible interest is the fact that I’ve just redesigned www.needlescratchstatic.blogspot.com

‘Needle Scratch Static’ is my main web presence, but perhaps I’ll start cross posting here.

Ooooh thanks for that blog link. Lovely, another place to happily fritter away time :-) I shall be doing a lot of time frittering this week! I will have to check out the programme too.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean - I'm living it right now! Worst thing is my mum falls asleep in front of it so I have to put up with it twice. So I get my own back. I just keep asking her "Who's that?" and "Why does he want to kill her?" and "Whose baby is it really then?" And I agree - the later books are probably better written but there was a such a lot of heart and soul in it. Great stuff.
That new TV series you have in your profile pic looks good. I loved The Shield.

It's the bloody soaps that get me. I'm down at my parents over Christmas and my Mum watches them. I don't but get them by osmosis while I'm here. Anyone would think that the towns of Emmerdale, Manchester and London are stuffed to the gunnels with murderers, arsonists, bigamists and adulterers at this time of year...oh...wait...And David Corbett - yes, love his stuff. The Devil's Redhead was amazing. I've enjoyed them all but that's still my favourite of his.

Cheers for the add! Nice list of favourite authors. Dark and warped - just how I like my fiction :-)

Gordon, great Blog you have there, and that must be the coolest picture ever. Your first novel should just be entitled "Crime" so that the cover reads "Gordon Harries Crime." Just an idea. All the best wishes from your friend in Dixieland.

Take it as a bit of fun. You said you didn't have a photo of yourself yet to put up so, I suggest you put up a series of say 10 photos and then we try and choose which one is the real Gordon based on the bit of knowledge we have about you. No malice intended whatsoever.
