A Glimpse Back

A month or so ago, one of my sisters found a box containing some of our mother's stuff that she didn't even know she had. Inside the box were pages and pages written in Mom's hand. Mom always liked to write, and I think if four children and being widowed at age 39 hadn't interfered, she would have been one hell of a writer.

She wrote on any kind of paper she could find. On some small scraps of three by five inch paper, I found the beginning of a novel. It was clearly autobiographical and even w… Continue

Tickets & Stuff

This post is a reprint of an article that was published in the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police magazine a few years ago. Officer Funtal's Traffic Camp is coming up in a couple of weeks and I thought this might be a good time to tell everyone about the program.

Imagine for a minute that you are seventeen years old. It is 6:45 a.m. and you are driving to the Shaler Area High School. Your favorite CD is playing and you’re tapping… Continue

My Neighbor and Yours

What is Sweater Day? you may ask. Well, I'll tell yinz (that's Pittsburgh talk for y'all, youse guys, whatever).

Angst and The Muse

Cross posted on Working Stiffs.

No matter how many blogs I read, or how many authors I talk to, we all suffer from the same thing—angst. According to dictionary.com, angst is defined as “a feeling of dread, anxiety, or anguish.”

To our way of thinking, our words are never good enough. That paragraph we just wrote? Pure trash. The dialogue that looked so right only minutes ago? Stilted. Th

Hi Joyce -- great to meet you here on Crimespace. Hoping to make it to Pittsburgh area (Mystery Lovers Bookshop) next spring when my new book comes out. I was fascinated by your story of finding a box of your mother's writings. Could be the intriguing opening of a mystery novel...

I should have read this message first. The only women I know with the maiden name "McCloskey" are my sisters, Carol & Irene, who grew up in Squirrel Hill. So unless you're a long-lost niece there's probably no familial connection. Even so, there are a great many fine writers here in Pittsburgh, and about to be many more as the newspapers shed staff. That's a crime in itself.
