Profile Information

Hometown:
Crooklyn, New York, USA: raised in the Rotten Apple
About Me:
Born in the year of the Metal Dog, of Malayan-Castillian heritage and blood, a native son of New York City. I don't live there right now. I work at an office job, I don't sleep enough. I play guitar, I read, I write (mostly poetry, songs, essays and short fiction--worked as a journalist in another lifetime), I do martial arts (The Filipino Martial Art of Kali Ilustrisimo, as well as various forms of Close Quarter Combatives), I meditate (badly). The landscape of my previous life can be summed up with the term "Noir"--though I've had blessedly sane and quiet patches of time, as of late. I grew up fiercely Hardcore Punk Rock. I have to think more about this bio and perhaps update it, sometime. I wear black and steel-toed boots habitually. I can be goddamned cranky and have exceptionally dark, bleak moods. I love with total ferocity and dedication. I can be a loyal and thoughtful friend and ally. I can be a relentless and terrible enemy. I have a penchant for the dramatic--it often shows in the women I seem to date and fall hard for. A fair amount of the above was written with my tongue fully-in-cheek, but I'm not actually kidding at all.
I Am A:
Reader, Writer
Books And Authors I Like:
Andrew Vachss, Hubert Selby Jr., James Ellroy, James Crumley, Jim Thompson, David Goodis, Gerald Kersh, Harlan Ellison, Jerry Stahl, Edward Bunker, Iceberg Slim, Chester Himes, Walter Mosley, George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, Eugene Izzi, Joe R. Lansdale, Ed Gorman, Greg Rucka, Barry Eisler, Max Alan Collins, Adam Hall, The Holy Trinity (Hammett, Chandler and Spillane), Nelson Algren, Henry Miller, Albert Camus, Friedrich Nietzsche, Max Stirner, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Yukio Mishima, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, Lawrence Durrell, Flannery O'Connor, Delmore Schwartz, Thom Jones, Harry Crews, Jim Carroll, Hunter Thompson, Victor Bockris, Nick Tosches, Legs McNeil, Lemmy Kilminster, Michael Gira, J.G. Ballard, John Shirley, K.W. Jeter, Karl Edward Wagner, Luc Sante, Gavin DeBecker, Sanford Strong, Marc MacYoung, Peyton Quinn, Geoff Thompson, Jerry VanCook, William E. Fairbairn, Col. Rex Applegate, John Styers, Charles Nelson, Kelly McCann (as "Jim Grover"), Rey Galang, Antonio Diego, Christopher Ricketts, Edgar Sulite, Dan Inosanto, Mark Wiley, Michael Janich, Tom Bisio, Miyamoto Musashi, Heraclitus, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Paul Eluard, Arthur Rimbaud, Ranier Maria Rilke, Blaise Cendrars, Pablo Neruda, Kenneth Rexroth, Jessica Hagedorn, Balthazar Gracian, Thich Nhat Hahn, Robert Young Pelton, and the formidable Ms. Lydia Lunch. I also really like pretty much every comic book ever done by Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, or Matt Wagner. I read tons of stuff--go ahead and ask me about it sometime.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
If it's a Paul Schrader, David Cronenberg, Martin Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola, Wong Kar Wai, Akira Kurosawa, "Beat" Takeshi, Clint Eastwood, (pre-Hollywood) John Woo, or David Lynch film...I'll probably dig it, or at least give it a shot. I loved the movie CITY OF GOD, and the movie PAN'S LABYRINTH. The best martial arts movie to date: William Friedkin's THE HUNTED, with Benicio Del Toro & Tommy Lee Jones (forget ENTER THE DRAGON and the Shaw Brothers!), followed by either James Cagney in 13 RUE MADELINE or Matt Damon's BOURNE flicks (if you know me, you'll understand). I'll avidly rent movies with Julie Delpy in them because...well, she's the enchanting and lovely Julie Delpy! I watch a lot of concert footage on DVD, the most recent being a helluva killer show that the now-reformed Iggy & The Stooges played in Detroit some time ago. I don't watch much TV, nor do I have HBO/Showtime--but I will watch THE SHIELD and RESCUE ME if they're on. Otherwise, it's just the news, The History Channel, or Court TV's true-crime stuff. I really dig both BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and MILLENIUM. I have a deep fondness for Diana Rigg's stint in THE AVENGERS.

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Crooklyn is to New York as the Big Sleazy is to New Orleans...although I live my city and My book, The Beatitudes, is a paranormal thriller set in New Orleans. It will be out in the fall and I am donating all royalties directly to the New Orleans Public Library Foundation. Libraries support the infrastructure of a great city, so I have started The Beatitudes Network to promote awareness of the importance of public libraries in NOLA.
The blogsite www.beatitudesinneworleans.blogspot.com describes the Network, has excerpts from The Beatitudes, recipes, and more. Merci mille fois. Lyn Lejeune.
Writers, please pass the word…..it’s for a good cause….don’t let the libraries of New Orleans or the US go the way of The Great Library of Alexandria.

"Crooklyn" is a simply neighborhood term, like the Bronx is "the Boogie Down", Harlem is simply "Uptown", the Lower East Side is "the Loisaida" and, when you are name-checking the neighborhood of Bed-Stuy (Bedford-Stuyvesant, in Brooklyn), you can follow it with the catch phrase "Do or Die".
I can't take credit for it, frankly.

Other cats I know also call it "The BK"--it simply depends on what part of Brooklyn you're from... All best, and till again!
