How is it almost July?

I am looking down at my hands and they are looking old. When did that happen? And how can it almost be July? Work has been quiet so I am happily writing several hours a day. Which leads me to the next question - Why the hell am I not finished this first draft yet? Yes it is more polished and there are fewer glaring cliches and missed words than the last rough draft I wrote, and yes I have been working hard - but it is still unfinished. I should be happy that I am at that lovely point where I can… Continue

In the Spring of Things and the Whidbey Conference

I hate to point it out, but here on the West Coast, Spring is gearing up and the cherry trees are starting to bloom. It is of course raining today but yesterday I hand tilled the veggie patch and saw a big fat bumble bee on the flowering rhododendron. My condolences to those under a meter of snow back east.
I had an amazing time at the Whidbey Writers Conference (www.writeonwhidbey.org/)! It is a small conference but the caliber of presenters and agents was very high, with writers like Elizabeth… Continue

Looking Ahead

My last post was full of optimism but alas writing nirvana was not mine in November. I wrote only 10,000 words and then my Dad suddenly became ill, went into hospital, almost died then was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer. That put a a serious dent in my creative side not to mention my very core. Things have settled down, my Dad is as well as he can be and I can now think of writing again. I have signed up for my first ever Writers Conference (Whidbey Island) and I am really looking forward… Continue

In Nanoland

November is here - yaaaa! It used to be my least favorite month but now it has become if not my favorite, certainly my most productive. I am again participating in National Write Month - NANOWRIMO - www.nanowrimo.org - to jump start my current novel. There is nothing like writing 50,000 words in a month to get you going. It's not pretty but very effective. Got to go... 49,000 words to go...

Hi Tina!
I didn't realise you were so embedded here on Crimespace! I haven't visited for a while. And my laptop blew up a couple of weeks ago and I lost all my old email and email addresses from Outlook ... so this is a great way to get back in touch. Hope the new book(s) are going OK! I've had interest from one agent who is no doubt stroking his chin right now over The Private Lie ... wish me luck. And write me, so I can get your email address again.

me, too seriously for the past year--seeking publication. I've learned a lot on here, Tina.

Hi Tina. Thanks for the comment. The book is set in the GVA... I think I've moaned over the slip-ups in the press on it enough. I used to live in New Westminster, right near where Burnaby, Coquitlam and New West intersect, and the books are primarily based in the Tri-Cities as a result. I've tried not to take too many liberties with them.

I love Vancouver, and usually visit every year. It's such a great place to write about. I'll definitely let you know when I'm headed that way again... Actually, in book two, due out in November, the house that Craig's dad lives in is located on the same actual street my best friend lives on, and their first names are Steve and Alison, which is how I picked those names for those characters - a little fun fact that wasn't in the public domain, until now.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get up to Vancouver on the book tour in the fall. I usually go to Seattle, so why not Vancouver as well, I say.

It is indeed based on the Bre-X scandal, which I covered. I was eating lunch with a bunch of guys from Freeport in Jakarta when word arrived that the geologist had "fallen" from the helicopter. It was maybe the only time in the history of journalism in Asia that a reporter got stuck with the lunch bill when he'd been out with a bunch of corporate executives.

I still have my Enron stock certificate. I framed it.

Hi Tina
Wow! Working on three novels in the space of a year. Very admirable. I'm sorry to hear about your dad's cancer. I hope you're able to lose yourself in your writing as an escape.
