Both. I've tried doing extensive character work where I build them from the ground up i.e. belief system, schools, pedigree, etc. And I've also tried doing extensive plot work by planning a novel t... Read More »

Well it's certainly intriguing. I haven't heard of the novel at all but I'm going over to your website to find out what it's about. Really, really cool. Read More »

An outlining question

Added a post Dec. 5, 2007

I find my story by writing. But usually there comes a point where I know where I'm going and why. While there are still surprises that I discover along the way I do need a little bit of a structure... Read More »

Before I Die by Jenny Downham

The burden of unique names

There's a trend that's been pissing me off no end and inspired by this article I thought I'd get if off my chest. I work in a community health centre and among the services we provide is Maternal Child Health. As parents come in to see the nurse, I tick off their name that they have arrived and as result I get to see the new trend of giving children a 'unique' name. In most instances this involves giving the child a tradition…

Advice for unpublished writers: My successful query letter

Josephine Damian who is on my daily must read blog roll did a post about query letters. She referenced an agent who says he's been receiving terrible query letters and this is possibly due to the e-query process. In the comments I wrote an essay-long comment and thought I'd post my query letter in case anyone can get any use out of it. As I said…

My 2007 Reading List

I read 78 books in total. I've allocated each book to one genre so I can do an overview of my reading habits. You can see how I categorised each by my complex coding system.

I don't think I will read this many books again. Last year I didn't write much writing and was just seeing out the year. In 2006 I read 52 books, so I'm by 26 books this year. My resolution next year will be to blog more about my reading. I'm usually too quick to reach for the next book to take the time to blog. Vie…

Book Rave: Baby Shark's Beaumont Blues by Robert Fate

I came across this series by reading a review in Spinetingler. The premise of the first book in the series Baby Shark hooked me from the start. Kristin Van Dijk is left for dead after a gang rape by a biker gang in the 1950s. Out for revenge she trains herself in the killing arts.

Baby Shark's Beaumont Blues picks up the series two years later. Kristin is 21 years old and a partner in a private eye firm. On the case to find a missing…

Amra, I was on the fence about joining here - myspace is time demand enough, but after signing up for DorothyL and the yahoo short mystery group, I decided now that I have a short break between semesters, I had time to get started here.

I guess getting a crime story published made me realize I could belong here with "writer" status as opposed to a wanna-be.

Hi Amra

Great to see another Melbourne writer on here. Fantastic that you have a novel coming out with Text. A friend of mine, Beth Montgomery, was the first author for young adults to be published with them, last year (The Birthmark).

Glad you liked Bob Fate's book. He's my neighbor and we often run into each other in the neighborhood as well as at Mystery Writers of America meetings and other such places. He's a good guy. I liked his book plenty too.
