My dirty (not so) secret is that I don't really care very much about plot. I'm a lot more interested in what my characters are thinking and saying. In crime--especially whodunit-style mystery writing--it's important to give readers enough plot so ...

Mine have been labeled "police procedural," although that's only true in the loosest possible sense. They're mostly dark comedies, but there doesn't seem to be a category for that.

Yeah--it smacks of collusion. An organization that has no right to represent me (or thousands of other authors) "negotiates" a crappy deal with a business that essentially gives said business free use of my property, which I'm then required to exp...

Holy crap--I'm going to be on NPR.

Linda Wertheimer's going to interview me for Morning Edition's "Crime in the City" feature. They've done interviews with lots of actual famous people--from Chelsea Cain to Robert B. Parker. Why they want to talk to me is anybody's guess. We'll do a kind of walking tour of Provincetown and talk about some of the locations in the books. No idea when it will air--soon-ish, I hope.

HIGH SEASON, the TV series?

Well, maybe... My lovely agent has hooked up with a TV agent at CAA who is now shopping my books around to a number of TV writer/producers. Stranger things have happened, right?

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.

I know you've been busy these days but I'm checking in to see if you have received my package containing your book of poetry for an inscription?

I keep trying to find you in various Wisconsin book sellers with no success. Got any retailers in central Wisconsin who carry your work? I'd order it online, but I like to support the brick-and-mortar shops as much as possible.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Jon. I do not mean to be a pest, but I sent you two emails regarding the inscription of one of your books. I am not sure if you received them or if there is a technical problem on my end and they were never sent. I thought I'd ask. Thanks again.

I am vindicated!!! When I booted up the computer this morning, guess what popped up on MSN? An article entitled, "How Hollywood takes good books and makes them into bad movies." Somebody up there likes me!!. Great article. You ought to read it.

Ion,
Thanks for your comments on my web discussion of "creative license." I sure did stir up a lot of dust. That was my intention. However, I think I "bent" the feathers of some of the screenwriters out there. But it's nice to hear the wide array of opinions and thoughts. It's sure is educational.
