There is a distinctive change in my signings these days: I'm actually making money.

Most of us who write never talk about the pay, which is usually abysmal. We write because we must, and we write because we have something to say and want people to hear it. Money is nice, but no one being realistic expects to make a fortune.

Most of us who write never talk about the pay, which is usually abysmal. We write because we must, and we write because we have something to say and want people to hear it. Money is nice, but no one being realistic expects to make a fortune.

Most of my signings over the years have ranged from quiet to excellent: before this year, probably the best one took place several years ago at the Borders store in Columbia, Maryland, where I sold all but three copies of Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula.

This year, though, not only did I do well in Atlanta (to be expected when 800 interested people were attending a Sherlock Holmes conference), I did almost as well over the last two days at the Bookstock festival in Woodstock, Vermont. In fact, I will actually have to order more copies of "Secrets Can't be Kept Forever" because I'm down to the last three copies.

I badly want to believe that, after years of hard work, things are finally starting to pay off. I hope so. One thing is for sure: I'm going back next year.

Next week, from July 25 through July 27, I'll be signing my books at the annual Bookstock Literary Festival, held in Woodstock, Vermont.
This will also be the first public signing of my newest effort, "Terror Strikes Downtown," in which crime reporter Ace Herron investigates the causes of a series of explosions which tear up the main street of Valentine, Vermont, changing many lives forever. Ace must also contend with a hostile and incompetent editor at the paper, and also a blast from his past. This is the second novel in the Ace herron series. I'm already drafting the next one.

So, please come! Fine fiction and cookies await.

I've been spending the week working on projects I have unfortunately allowed to go by the wayside, but as a result, I had a brainstorm this morning resulting in something, I hope, will prove to be much better. So in the next few days I'll be researching one idea while continuing on the others. No wonder it takes me so long to complete books.

I have also launched a cable talk show, "Book Talk." The show is dedicated to the world of books, writing and reading, and we're trying to be as broad as possible. Anyone with something to say about books and reading is welcome. If you write books, so much the better.

Amy Howlett, Vermont Department of Libraries, graciously consented to be my first guest, and we had a marvelous conversation about the role of libraries in the community, books we enjoy, suggestions for reading, and more. It's as jam-packed a half hour as anyone could wish.

The program will air first on Springfield Area Public Access TV in Vermont, and then become available for wider distribution. I've found a national public access clearinghouse in Maine, so who knows where this could go? I'll also be posting them on YouTube, of course.

Yesterday gave us perfect bookselling and book signing weather. Both "Secrets Can't Be Kept Forever" and "Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula" did quite well. I hope to be there next year.

In case anyone here owns a bookstore, I would like you to know that my publisher, MX Publishing USA, values independent bookstores and has a policy of making its books available to them before the large chains and online retailers get them.

This is Stephen King at his best, which is a relief after the disappointing "Under the Dome."

The novel deals with the perils of time travel, and the consequences of interfering in history. The protagonist, Jake Epping, is given the opportunity to prevent the Kennedy assassination, but there is a catch: the portal's entry point is fixed in 1958, which means Jake has a lot of time to fill.
The novel deals with the perils of time travel, and the consequences of interfering in history. The protagonist, Jake Epping, is given the opportunity to prevent the Kennedy assassination, but there is a catch: the portal's entry point is fixed in 1958, which means Jake has a lot of time to fill. He does this by creating two lives for himself: one in Dallas-Fort Worth to keep an eye on Lee Harvey Oswald, and another as a high school English teacher in Jodie, Texas. Needless to say, this has its consequences as well, not the least of which is falling in love with a woman who'll be around 80 years old in 2011. And what about those other lives?

Besides being a first-rate thriller, "11/22/63" is also a meditation on meddling where you don't belong and the reach of unintended consequences. Ordinarily, I would discuss some of the flaws, but for this book I honestly can't think of one. I only hope King is careful about writers and directors when it comes time to make the film. (Personally, I vote for Frank Darabont.)

Don't let its 850 pages daunt you. You'll turn them all, and quickly.

Public Access Cabletag:crimespace.ning.com,2013-07-10:537324:BlogPost:3745992013-07-10T15:41:01.000ZStephen Seitzhttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/StephenSeitz

This morning, I made arrangements for a cable access program on my books. I'll be discussing the content, process, and whatever my interviewer has in mind.

But I have since discovered there is a nationwide distributor of cable access programming. That means more than the 15 or so viewers in the old hometown; there is a potential audience of millions.

Has anyone else tried this? With what results?

I had a great interviewing experience with Steve Smith, the morning host for WCNL Country. We talked about my new novel, about Sherlock Holmes, writing, media, you name it. A half hour that went much too quickly.

I'll post the MP3 when I get a chance.

For those of you who don't already know, I have recently published my first contemporary crime novel, "Secrets Can't Be Kept Forever," in which crime reporter Ace Herron discovers that a routine case of embezzlement and childnapping is much, much more.

We all know the hard part: getting the word out. I will have a formal launch party on August 1, and I'm working on some other things. But if you're an author with minimal name recognition and you're moving books, please let me know how…
