I feel just terrible. If you were my children, the DCFS would have hauled you all away by now, and with good reason.

First things last:

The lovely Patti Abbott recently tossed down the gauntlet to write a flash-fiction incorporating that smash hit by The Eurythmics, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)."

Also, this week, Title Fights went live. What it is, see, is every couple'a months, the editors call a theme and dispense titles based on that theme to the writers interested. The stories can be about whatever, so long as they tie into the title assigned. For this first go-'round, the theme was trucker lingo, and yours truly penned a little number called "T.R. Switch," and it sure was fun to write. Also, while you're there check out Josh Converse's "Baby Bear," and drop a line to them Title Fights cats and tell 'em you want in on the action.

On the non-fiction side of things, the aforementioned doll-face Patti Abbott invited me to participate in her weekly Friday's Forgotten Books column, and so I took on the 1953 novel by CIA agent and Watergate convict Howard Hunt entitled Lovers Are Losers. Have a gander.

And surprisingly to no one moreso than myself, I was asked by the fine folks over at Spinetingler Magazine to answer a few questions as part of their "Conversations with the Bookless" series. If you've ever wondered just what goes on in my addle-pated skull, you can get a glimpse here. But seriously, if you have, check yourself into the hospital.

Kids, it just doesn't end there. I have certainly been a busy boy. PopMatters, that glorious internet dispensary of smarty-pants criticism on all things popular (or at least, quasi- so), has been keeping me hopping as a staff writer for the Comics section (though I have delved into a couple other disciplines). This is in addition to my own monthly spoutings on the glory of comical books at my regular site, Attention, Children. Sequential Art. I and some of the other kids in the hall have been hard at work deconstructing the slasher film sub-genre over at Let's Kill Everybody! And, of the many fiction projects I am currently juggling, one is a story for Sgt. Jason Duke's crime-fiction contest, wherein you too may compete for not only cash prizes, but the envy and admiration of friends and enemies alike. So get on that, forthwith.

Anyways, enough about me. What have you been up to?
When the Whistle Blowstag:crimespace.ning.com,2010-03-27:537324:BlogPost:2310132010-03-27T17:19:46.000ZJimmy Callawayhttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/JimmyCallaway

So, kicking off the week in style, Dan O'Shea's flash fiction challenge hit the interwebs like a shotgun full of rock salt.
Then, after reading Grant's own submission to said contest, Reverberations, I found myself compelled to pen another little adventure for The Deaf Guy. Again, Christopher Grant hosted it at ATON, but not before having many kind words to say about yours truly, making me blush like Carrie White on prom night. Obvious niches of sweetness and light--Plots with Guns, ThugLit, et al--are great, but it's really easy to dry your eyeballs out reading entire short stories on-line (not to bite any hands that have fed me here). Along those lines, then, we have the flash-fiction site. I've always liked flash fiction, writing and reading it, but you often only get so very little at a time. Out of the Gutter is the only tangible publication off the top of my head that actively keeps this nifty little genre going. It seems to me that no one wants to "waste" paper by publishing stories less than two pages long. So enter the Internet machine.

Take .15 seconds to google flash-fiction and see how many bite-sized delights you can find. Or your Uncle Jimmy here can make it easier for you and direct you to his own flash-fiction now up on Powder Burn Flash.

And as long as you've got five or ten minutes, check out some more on Powder Burn, and then bang a flash-fiction or three out yourself. So I had a story accepted today for Plots with Guns (http://www.plotswithguns.com/index.htm) in a record four minutes. It's also a record because it'll be my first published story. I had a bunch of other writing planned for today, but I'm nearly too excited to focus. But focus I shall, because this goddamn comic script has been a year in the making, and it's really not good enough to have taken that long. So back to the limestone.

I just dropped $25 I could probably use for food or something. Instead, it's going to Ebay for books, of all things. Like I don't have enough of them. Pronzini, Lansdale, McCarthy, and Ellison: I hope you're pleased with yourselves.

Oh, who am I kidding, I can't stay mad at you guys.

Managed to crank out a first draft for my entry into the Crimespace Australia contest. I feel way less gay for having made steps to participate in this particular contest. Anyways, blah blah blah.

Re: that last blog of mine.

Turns out you gotta join up with that Gather website to view my entry. And then the entries that recieve the most votes of ten stars get to move on to the next round. So basically a contest to see who can shill Gather.com to the most people.

Fuck.

That.

Not for nothing, but judging by some of the other people on that site and some of the other entries, if nobody votes for me, then I'm on the right track. And so far, I couldn't be more…

Do I sound bitter? Because I'm really not. I'm just tired, that's all. I gotta go to work.
Oh, yeah, here I am.tag:crimespace.ning.com,2007-11-14:537324:BlogPost:929382007-11-14T04:42:25.000ZJimmy Callawayhttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/JimmyCallaway

Y'know, I'd almost forgotten I had a profile on here. My internet presence leaves much to be desired. Or not desired, depending.

Anyways, yeah, crime. Crime's rad. Except when my car gets stolen. Or the passenger's side door lock busted in. Or when my roommate's checks get boosted from our mailbox. But even then, I at least get an opportunity to use the word "paper-hanger."

Been reading Joshua Armstrong's The Seekers. It's pretty good. I could do without some of the blowhard-y philosophy, but that's just me. The guy still makes Dog the Bounty Hunter look like a mullet-headed douche (here's where you say, "Well, Dog the Bounty Hunter makes Dog the Bounty Hunter look like a mullet-headed douche." Then we chuckle smugly). Anyways, it sucks that I couldn't find a decent book on bounty hunting in any local library, but God bless that E-bay. I found this book and Bob Burton's excellent Bounty Hunting on there for less than the gas money it would take me to drive down the street to the library if they'd had it anyway. Blah, I'm rambling.

I'm reading up on this stuff, in case you're interested (you're not), as research for the comic my other roommate and I are working on, The Nine Lives of Panther McDaniels. Truck Turner is one of my favorite movies, and serious blaxploitation comics (as opposed to stuff like Super Bad James Dynomite) seem to be lacking. Although if somebody can point me to a counter-example of that, I'll buy you a beer.

My writing output ain't what it used to be these days, and what it used to be wasn't much to begin with. I entered that Court TV contest the other day, though who's to say it'll lead anywhere. It's something to do, y'know, better than a kick in the face. You can read my entry here (or at least, I hope you can): http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977171713

I'm always wary about stuff like this, ever since I lost that one writing contest in the 5th grade (I'll tell you that story later, if you want). In the meantime, I'll try and keep up with the ol' crimespace a bit more. I've been far too old for myspace for a while. Ta.

ADDENDUM: I tried that link after I posted and it says "article unavailable." Maybe once the actual contest starts on Thursday, then you can see it. I'll let you know.
