There's been a lot said about the rights and wrongs of giving books away, but before KDP Select and the opportunity to make my books free, they were all but invisible. Consequently I'm having another one day giveaway, for short story collection 'Show No Mercy' and debut novel 'Convictions'.

'Convictions' generally does very well indeed over two days, so it will be interesting to see how many readers it attracts with a one day only promotion.

The first in the series, written by Paul himself, is a humdinger of an opener, introducing werewolf PI Roman Dalton and the mean streets he prowls. Paul's writing always packs a punch and DotM is no exception. Grab a copy and see for yourself - it's well worth the meagre 71p/99c it costs.

Review:

As anyone who is familiar with Paul Brazill's writing knows, he has a certain style. Prose, dialogue, plot, characterisation - all combine to make for a memorable reading experience. And Drunk on the Moon is no exception. Werewolf PI Roman Dalton is a classic creation and in DotM he grabs you by the throat and drags you through the mean streets he prowls, not letting go until the tale is told. Then, while you're gathering your wits and wondering where the hell you are, he sits at the bar sipping whiskey ... until the next adventure.

This is a brilliant start to what promises to be a terrific series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the stories develop. Don't miss out!
News, reviews and interviewstag:crimespace.ning.com,2011-06-29:537324:BlogPost:2970752011-06-29T10:28:25.000ZJulie Morriganhttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/Julielew

I mention it because it contains the writing of the immensely talented Richard Godwin. His debut novel Apostle Rising is a terrific read, and if you want an instant fix - and the chance to read both poetry and prose - he has two new pieces at Muck and Muse.

On to reviews. It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Josh Stallings, a writer who has knocked many of us sideways with his Moses McGuire series. The first book in the series was Beautiful, Naked and Dead (which I reviewed here on GB) and now the second book, Out There Bad, is available. It's a monster of a book, a wild ride and a worthy successor to BND, and my good friend Paul Brazill has read and reviewed it on his blog.

And finally, interviews. Nick Quantrill made his mark with debut novel Broken Dreams (which I rabbited on about here on GB) and he has just been interviewed by Luca Veste over at Guilty Conscience. Great stuff, well worth a read.

I've also been rattling on (again!) this time over at Iain Rowan's place. If you're not sick of me yet, you can read it here.

Then to round off this embarrassment of riches, my interview with David Wisehart at Kindle Author also went live today.

Congratulations, Ian - it's a fantastic story. It stays with you long after you've finished reading, too.

BROKEN DREAMS is Nick Quantrill’s debut novel, and it’s a cracker.

It can’t be easy being a PI in northern England - Hull, to be precise - and in Joe Geraghty, we have a character to savour. Joe isn’t perfect, but he’s essentially a good man, despite the things life has thrown at him. Flawed, tenacious, loyal and a romantic at heart, Joe gets by one day at a time, driven as much by misplaced guilt as the need to see justice done.

BROKEN DREAMS is a very satisfying tale, its characters believable and all too human, its many strands interwoven beautifully. One of those strands is Hull itself, the city and its history, the essence of the place coming through loud and clear.

This book should be on everyone’s ‘To read’ list, as should the much-anticipated sequel, THE LATE GREATS, due in autumn 2011. One to watch out for.

My partner and I have a new website which we are very pleased with. We're just wondering whether we ought to add e-book services to the range. We collaborated on the cover to my recent e-book GONE BAD and I did the formatting, which I found very straightforward. I know not all writers have the inclination to do these things themselves, so perhaps it would be a useful service to offer. Might be worth giving it a trial period, at least.
Calorie free e-Easter treatstag:crimespace.ning.com,2011-04-20:537324:BlogPost:2849892011-04-20T10:25:07.000ZJulie Morriganhttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/Julielew
I blogged about some alternatives to the traditional chocolate egg over at Gone Bad, books that won't broaden the hips but might broaden the mind. Can't be bad!

I blogged over at Another Day in the Word Factory about how much I love to write and yet how inventive I can be when it comes to putting writing off. Sometimes the hardest thing to do can be the simplest - sit down with a pen and paper and use the former to put words on the latter, or start typing on a keyboard and see the screen gradually fill up.

I always used to write a first draft longhand. Part of the ritual of starting a new project would be going to buy a new notebook to write it in. These days I more often write direct onto computer. I remember reading somewhere (although I can't remember where) that the different approaches to writing engage different parts of the brain. Yesterday, when I was stuck and nothing would come, I put the laptop down and went to sit in my favourite 'watching the world go by' seat with a pen and some scrap paper. Sure enough, half an hour later I was back in business, ideas flowing and words lining up.

I guess we all have our tricks for kick-starting the creative process. I'm just grateful when it all starts to come together, no matter what it takes to make it happen!

Less than two weeks ago, I read some stuff that opened my mind to the possibilities and opportunities presented by e-books. I did a complete about face and went from being totally disinterested in them to becoming very enthusiastic about them. Perhaps the most insightful observation made to me regarding this was that I was initially looking at e-books from the point of view of a reader who would far rather have a 'proper' book, and moved to the standpoint of a writer who wanted to be able to…

Less than two weeks ago, I read some stuff that opened my mind to the possibilities and opportunities presented by e-books. I did a complete about face and went from being totally disinterested in them to becoming very enthusiastic about them. Perhaps the most insightful observation made to me regarding this was that I was initially looking at e-books from the point of view of a reader who would far rather have a 'proper' book, and moved to the standpoint of a writer who wanted to be able to have direct contact with readers. I think that sums it up quite nicely!

Mind you, I've since downloaded the Kindle for PC and started reading e-books for myself: Nick Quantrill's 'Broken Dreams' and Nigel Bird's 'Dirty Old Town' were two of my first purchases. Along with J A Konrath's 'A Newbie's Guide to Publishing'.

I've learned a lot, and fast. And I have now published my first e-book, a collection of short stories drawn from those I wrote between 2006 and 2011, and containing a previously unpublished piece.
