When firefighters respond to a suspected meth explosion at a trailer park, they discover a man’s body in a neighboring trailer, unburned but with terrible head wounds. The meth cooker lies in critical condition, and undercover narcotics officer Stephen Holder feels a kinship with the child the man leaves behind.

Then another man’s body is discovered in a shipping container at the Port of Seattle, shot execution-style. For Homicide Detective Sarah Linden, two cases soon become one, and she must unravel a complex web of addiction, greed, and betrayal to reveal a killer.

"I’m ten years old. My Big Ben-style alarm clock has stopped working. Maybe I wound it too tightly, maybe it’s just worn out. Whatever the reason, the alarm hasn’t gone off in days.

I know I can fix it, if only I can get a look inside. When I tell my parents, they don’t laugh. Instead, my dad gives me a set of miniature screwdrivers, my mom gives me an empty shoebox, and on that day, my writing career is born.

Okay, technically, I didn’t take up novel writing until I was in my mid-forties. But by encouraging me to go ahead and try to fix that clock, even though they knew full well that all I’d have to show for my efforts would be a shoebox full of clock parts, my parents in effect said, “We believe in you.”

You can pick up a copy of the magazine at your local bookstore, or purchase one online through Writer's Digest's website.

The article explains how authors can incorporate their research smoothly into their novels, and along with my own comments, includes advice from bestselling thriller authors Steve Berry, Douglas Preston, Gayle Lynds, David Hewson, and Joe Moore.

Here's a sampling:

David Hewson, bestselling author of the Nic Costa series: "The reason we use truth in fiction is so we can tell a bigger, better lie. It's the lie -- how big, convincing and 'real' it is -- that matters."

New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston: "In a novel, something doesn't have to be true; it only has to be believable. The word 'fiction' is a marvelous cover for all kinds of shenanigans, distortions, manipulations and outright fabrications."

Karen Dionne: "Readers love learning something new, but above all, remember: a novel is a story. An author's job is to entertain. Don't let your enthusiasm for your material turn your novel into the literary equivalent of three hours of vacation pictures."

What the article DOESN'T discuss is the research trip I took last spring to visit the setting for my upcoming novel: an active volcano in Northern Patagonia, Chile. The trip was an absolute blast (pun intended).

I know I'm not alone in sticking my neck out for my art.
Entertainment for the October 1-3, 2008 event includes video welcomes from David Morrell, Gayle Lynds, James Rollins, and Douglas Preston, a reading by a professional voice actress who's also a New York Times author, standup comedy from one of my author friends - even testimony from a medical doctor regarding the science behind the story's premise. There are door prizes: a boxed set of the BBC's "Planet Earth" series on DVD, bottles of genuine iceberg water, and Penguin Gear from my publisher. And because a book launch party wouldn't be complete without, well, books, two independent booksellers are making signed copies available.

Compared to a real-world book launch, an online party has definite advantages. Where else but on the Internet could my mom hang out with Lee Child? There's no limit to the guest list, work schedules and time zones don't even factor, and perhaps best of all, guests can attend wearing their pajamas.
Karen is the brainchild behind the wonderful writer's forum Backspace, and finally, her debut thriller is about to arrive this fall. The action is nonstop and the hot button issue - finding untapped resources to solve a growing drinking water shortage - is timely in light of rising populations, global warming and other signs of the economic slowdown. But just when a solution (melt the icebergs!) arrives, then things get really frightening. Dionne combines the necessary scientific background with a knack for upping the stakes as the story goes along. Others may call her the next so-and-so, but the first Karen Dionne works for me.

I think I'm in love. :)
A few months before the release of my debut thriller, FREEZING POINT, I decided I was going to use the Internet to promote my novel as much as possible.

From talking to other writers, I knew there were plenty of promotional opportunities available - blog tours, online book clubs, book review sites, video sharing, and social network sites where people who might be interested in the topic of my book gathered.

I heard words like "Authorbuzz" and "LibraryThing" and "Shelfari," but didn't know what they meant, or how these sites and services could help promote my book.

And while I had an author page at MySpace, I wasn't sure how to make the most of it.

I looked for a resource that would explain it all; that had all of the Internet promotional opportunities listed in one place - a central database where everything could be accessed without wasting precious writing and promotional hours googling.

And when I couldn't find one, my Backspace partner, Christopher Graham, and I decided to make our own.

What is The Backspace Book Promotion Network?

The Backspace Book Promotion Network is a searchable database of thousands of listings of Internet book promotion opportunities. Current, comprehensive information - an extensive collection of everything related to Internet book promotion that we could find on the Web. Most of the listings are free, while some, such as newsletter advertising and press release services, are available to authors for a small cost.

But The Backspace Book Promotion Network is more than a vast collection of links. Our Articles section tells you how to USE these promotional opportunities to best advantage. The articles are written by the people who know: website designers, publicists, best-selling authors.

Publishers have a finite amount to spend on marketing, and the bulk of their promotional dollars go to best-selling authors. Literary agencies hire full-time publicists to take up the slack. Authors with small presses and self-published authors are at an even bigger disadvantage.

Smart authors are figuring out new and innovative ways to promote their books using the Internet. The Backspace Book Promotion Network can help. $30 for six months; $50 for one year.

Not much more than the price of a good book.John Searles, books editor for Cosmo, to keynote at the Backspace Writers Conferencetag:crimespace.ning.com,2008-06-06:537324:BlogPost:1448182008-06-06T11:05:15.000ZKaren Dionnehttp://crimespace.ning.com/profile/KarenDionne
