Life Imitates Art

I'm not sure that I'm giving anything away if I say that THE FRAILTY OF FLESH is a hard book for my protagonists, and one character in particular. Working on the next book in the series, one of the key things is how people are seeing this person. They're trying to figure out if the character is okay, and they're looking for some sign, some normal behaviour, some actions that reassure them that they'll have the person they know back again.

This is where life imitates art. We've been… Continue

Meet Me in VA this weekend

The biggest and most popular shopping spot in my area is Potomac Mills, and that's where I'll be this Saturday. From 1 pm to 5 pm I'll be book signing at the giant Books-A-Million there. We'll see if post New Year shoppers are as eager to find a good read as post Christmas shoppers were.

Potomac Mills is composed of a number of buildings. I’ll be at 2700 Potomac Mills Cir, in Woodbridge, VA.

Networking Outside of Civilization

Northern Michigan is beautiful, peaceful, and wonderful. However, if you're looking to run into an agent, an editor, or a publisher you can chat up and pitch to, forget it. In the dearth of publishing contacts withing 200 miles, I've learned to appreciate the people I meet who have some idea of what writing is all about.

Readers-The people who love bookstores, love reading, love meeting a "real" author.

Wannabe Writers-They might be found anywhere, like the woman at Home… Continue

Hey, the premiere issue of Crooked Magazine is up!

The premiere issue of Crooked Magazine is up. No, you won't find tips in there on how to redecorate your den or the latest in spring fashions, we're talking neo-noir and hard-boiled fiction. Yours truly has a story in there too, called "Redemption." Pop on over and take a gander.

Goodbye Donald Westlake

Prolific mystery writer Donald Westlake (aka Richard Stark, aka Tucker Coe, aka several other pseudonyms) died on New Year’s Eve. Every August for my birthday I read a Donald Westlake “Dortmunder” novel and a Richard Stark “Parker” novel. Throughout the year I read other stuff he wrote, but this is always a special birthday treat for myself.

A couple of good sentences that always stuck with me:

“When the phone rang, Parker was in the garage, killing a man.”

-Opening… Continue

RIP Donald Westlake

Donald Westlake has died from apparent heart failure at age 75.

While I've been a fan of Westlake's pseudonym Richard Stark for some time, I've only just started reading his humorous Dortmunder novels. He was a prolific, versatile genius and will be sorely… Continue

It's Been a While--and, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's been a while since I've added a Blog Post--last year, no less, and I'm not sure that I have a lot to say. This last year came apart for almost everyone near its end, and it looks like 2009 is going to be one of metered optimism, more of a year for waiting than a year for action. Good news--everything went on SALE! Bad news--no one has any money. I'm betting that 2009 is going to be more of those seesaw sort of swings and nothing can be taken for granted for a while.

Last year… Continue

Happy New Year Indeed

One really can't complain when they wrap up the year with a review like this:

THE FRAILTY OF FLESH by Sandra Ruttan: Another great outing from Sandra Ruttan who is building her cast of Canadian constables into a winner of a series. A child is found beaten to death, his brother names their sister as the killer. The entire family is obviously dysfunctional and an impediment to solving the crime. A cold case continues to haunt the department and jeopardize current…

New Year, New something

Been a while since I posted. What happened to all the vampires on TV? I took a look at my profile noticed that the two vamps series I liked have been cancelled. So, are they on their way out? In a rejection letter to someone, Janet Reid comment that they are becoming a hard sell. Really? How can that be? I mean, how can we ever be tired of a creature we love to hate and hate to love?

Sheesh, wonder how werewolves and ghosts are doing?

Happy New Year everyone. Sure hope '09 puts the… Continue

A busy year ahead

2009 promises to be a busy year for me with seven of my books being published and some talks and events already lined up. But first, as it is the New Year, it's a good time to reflect on what has gone before and then to set objectives and look forward to events in 2009. So here goes:

Looking back at 2008

In Cold Daylight, my thriller featuring Adam Greene, reached the top ten shortlist for the World Book Day Prize 2008 and came sixth in an on line… Continue

The Personality Gene

Before I start opining, HAPPY NEW YEAR. How long is it going to take YOU to start writing 2009 on important documents?

Second, don't forget that book reviewer P.J. Coldren is my guest blogger on Wednesdays in January. She begins with a piece on judging for contests.

The subject that comes to mind this morning is personality. We all have one (although it's hard to see in some people), and it seems to be a mystery where it comes from. Why are some people shy? My roommate in… Continue

Goodbye 2008

I have to admit, I'll be glad to say goodbye to 2008. It wasn't exactly the best year for me and mine. But before I "mentally" move ahead to 2009, there are some blessings I need to recall for this year. Kind of a reverse New Year's resolution. So, here are my top 10 blessings I'm thankful for in 2008, in random order:

1. My family is together and healthy.

2. My friends who love me despite my oddities. (Or maybe they love me because of them-lol)

3. My eldest is sharing her faith,… Continue

2008, What Did You Do This Year?

If it's cool on the internet, you know I'm right there, doing it three years later. So, that said, here's what I got done last year and some goal setting for next year to make me feel bad at the end of 2009.

If you've got a year in review, link it to me in comments. If you've got goals for next year, link it to me so we can share successes together next year.

In no particular order:

1. I made money as a writer this year, and it didn't involve taking my… Continue

Nancy Means Wright's Review of Mood Swing

Through our Mavens chapter of Sisters in Crime, I've come to know the wonderful mystery writer Nancy Means Wright. She posted the following review of my first novel, Mood Swing: The Bipolar Murders, on Amazon, and since BSP is OK on our personal blogs, I'm posting it almost in its entirety:

I began this novel with trepidation - like many others, I'm a little in awe, a little uncomfortable with people with "mood swings." But as I read this terrific novel and got to know the… Continue
