Barbotte

A couple of years ago a short story I wrote called Barbotte appeared in Dave Zeltserman's webzine Hard Luck Stories, edited by Ed Gorman.

Now Smashwords has made it easy for me to give the story away in a bunch of different formats. I use the Stanza app to read Smashwords books on my iPod. You don't need a dedicated e-reader, the books can be read online and are also available as .pdf and text…

Jimmy Carter, apartheid, hemorrhoids and Matt Beynon Rees

I often receive emails from book stores, amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and online literary sites telling me how much I’d like the novels of Matt Beynon Rees. I’m delighted to see these emails, which are based on my other purchases and interests, as only I can truly know just how much the novels of Matt Beynon Rees have changed my life. (Try them, I’m sure you’ll agree.)

Of course, I also get the occasional email informing me that if I like Matt Beynon…

Meet Me in MD Saturday

Saturday I will visit with my friends at the Borders in the Boulevard at the Capital Centre. I'll be stationed near the newly-expanded African American interest sections at the front of the store across from the music department. They've hosted a lot of great guests at this store: Tyler Perry, Mo'Nique, Robin Thicke, Russell Simmons...…

More on e-publishing--how many of you own a reading device?

I wrote about some of the positives about e-publishing yesterday. Here are some of the negatives. To start, there is the small percentage of people who actually own a reading device. The number is growing rapidly, but it's still small. 5 or 10 years from now this will be much less of an issue. Reaching those people can be difficult, particularly for fiction. Sites like this one can help, because at least you have a target audience. But how many of you own reading devices?

The ease of…

Sobbing on the Pages

I've never been much for sob stories. Of course, great literature tends to be tragic, and some of those stories are on my list of all-time favorites. I love reading versions of the King Arthur legend, for example, but I know that I'll be sad at the end because that "fleeting wisp of glory" could not sustain itself in the face of Man's corruption.

The best tragedies offer us some kind of hope, but even so, as I've gotten older, I find myself reading fewer books that I know can't end…

Another Great Thriller!

I like to point out volumes that you may want to add to your library. This week I want to steer you to Watchlist, a book published by the International Thriller Writers, Inc. I'm not a big fan of samplers, those collections of unrelated stories by different authors, but I do like a lot of variety in my literary diet, so Watchlist appealed to me. The book features two novellas and 21 of the best thriller writers alive.

The two story ideas, and the primary characters, came from one of… Continue

'Legacy of the Ripper' in Amazon.co.uk's Top 100 Historicals.

I'm really delighted that my novel Legacy of the Ripper, sequel to A Study in Red, today showed up in Amazon.co.uk's Top 100 Historical novels By the time you read this, it will probably have fallen a few places but today it showed at #80, and I'm over the moon that it made it that far.

The ups and downs of e-publishing

Well, I finally did it. After too many rejections in the increasingly competitive world of real books, I decided to publish my mystery/suspense novel, Tangled Webs, as an e-book on smashwords.com. The best things about e-publishing on this venue are that it's free and they take anything! (as long as it's formatted correctly) And smashwords gives the author about 80% of the book's price (match that, traditional publishing!) Another nice feature is that the author designates how much of the book… Continue

Vive the Difference

There are Canadian members who might be interested in my posting on my own website blog (www.johnmoss.ca) in regard to Quebec and the rest of Canada, or the ROC. I won't burden other members with the nuances of Canadian cultural machinations by posting my argument here. It's not about crime, after all, except in the most extravagant sense of the word.

Balance

In the Army I was often told to lead, follow, or get out of the way. I often wondered how much damage was done by people making the wrong choice from those options. Now that I'm more mature I see that the mistakes made in this area even out over time.

Most who lead, can't. Most who…

Interview with Michael Robotham

Post the release of his latest book BLEED FOR ME Michael Robotham

generously spared me some time when he was in Melbourne recently.

BLEED FOR ME is the 5th book in Robotham's central series, which is

cleverly based around a shifting focus of 3 loosely connected

characters. Unexpectedly, but pleasingly for readers, BLEED FOR ME

sees the focus staying with Professor Joe O'Loughlin following on from

SHATTER.

Michael, born and raised in NSW Australia,… Continue
