I Can Stop Anytime I Want

Okay, so I bought an e-reader. And I had to try it out, of course, so I downloaded a book my husband has been wanting to read (and tricked him into trying the thing and finding out how easy it is to use. HA!)

Then, of course, I had to download my e-book to see what it looks like to my readers.

I heard from an online contact who likes my work, and I thought about her first book, which I read and really liked, so I tried her name, and there she was, an e-book author. So of course, I… Continue

Signing up

A book takes a long time to write, and then it takes a while to sell. And another while to sell in another country, and another after that. So a writer’s smile spreads across time.

My long-term grin widened this weekend, when I signed with my UK publisher for my next two books. Not only because Atlantic, the excellent publisher which has brought out all four of my Palestinian crime novels, bought my next books. But because Atlantic is launching a very exciting…

What advice would you give?

Hannah McLay Arnold is 12 and going into seventh grade. Says her grandmother, Jean Arnold, a friend of mine, Hannah is a wonderful storyteller and writer, and has been since she started talking and playing with her stuffed animals.

Hannah’s favorite class? English.

We writers love her.

Said Jean in a contact via Facebook, “I think she [Hannah] should meet a ‘real’ author. I told her I would contact you.”

Jean is looking for suggestions of what her… Continue

Hunting for an agent/publisher . . . again, dammit!

Here I am hunting again for a lit agent and/or publisher for A Taste of Old Revenge, the second book in my Turner Hahn/Frank Morales sereis.

What gets me is this; go to all the sites that lists agents and what you get are the same lists over and over again. The same names. The same agencies. If, in the past you contacted them once and they said not only no but 'Hell, no!" what's to make me think they're going to change their minds?

It's enough…

Love is Murder... but Pitchapalooza is Easy!

Pitchapalooza Protocol:

Prepare a 2 to 3-minute succinct platform of your work. (For a good description of what a “platform” is, read Sarie Morrell’s article

describing publicity
she developed for CREEPERS, a novel by her father,

David Morrell.)

Practice your pitch to include the salient points—definitive type or

sub-genre of mystery; what sets your manuscript apart from others in

this category; etc.… Continue

The Bedroom: Where the Magic Happens!!!

Writing is hard. It might even be the hardest job there is. Which is why

where you do your writing is so important. Having been asked by "Living

in the First Draft"
to describe the place where I usually bring my

stories to life, I discovered that the magic almost always happens

inside the bedroom, even if that bedroom is in Africa on board a

hospital… Continue

Publisher Pushes Back Release Date 7 Months

The headline sums it up. If you were looking to read my crime novel, "Cleansing Eden," in Nov. 2010, you'll have to wait until June 2011.

How do I feel about this? I still have a contract. I suppose that's worth something.

If ever there was cause for e-publishing, this is it. Have you ever heard of a seven-month delay in e-publishing? No. But do e-books carry the same air of legitimacy as a print book from a traditional publisher? No.

In the meantime, I encourage… Continue

Not knowing when the deal was going down Steele dropped his bags off in the room and reached the marina just in time to see the Strictly Business and the second boat dock. Steele staked out a secluded spot about a
