long time no see

I've got too involved with FaceBook and neglected crime! I had a new book out in September, the 18th Daisy Dalrymple mystery:

The 17th, Black Ship, came out in trade paperback the same day:

And Daisy reached England at last, with BLACK SHIP this month, preceded by the first three titles, with brand new covers:…

Another Cool Review

I think I've introduced you to Loretta Craig before, and she’s back with another book review.

I first met Loretta in April at a writer's event. She is an aspiring mystery author although we might not know when she hits the best seller list because there's already a mystery writer with the same name.

To my great joy, Loretta became a fan. She read The Troubleshooter and reviewed it. When Russian Roulette was released she did the same. And now she’s sent a nice note about… Continue

Psychiatrist, anyone?

I need some expert opinions regarding a very rare psychotic condition. Little information is out there, including the DSM-IV. Is anyone available to exchange a couple emails? Thanks, Lala

Pay Dim Tim and Jukebox Johnny a Visit!

My story, Dim Tim and Jukebox Johnny, won 2nd place in Eric Beetner's contest. The theme of the story was to be a FIST, and was sort of spawned from his new book, Too Many Blows To The Head.

This was great fun to write, and hopefully, just as much fun to read. My story is up today on his blog, so if you have a bit of time, check it out. There's also info on his book and a killer trailer for it too. Enjoy!

What I Love About Crimespace

I would admit that it's not helping me sell books. I admit that I spend more time than I should posting 5 days/week and responding to others. And I'll admit that we hammer at the same old questions over and over: Should I...? Can I...? Why do they...? And so on.

What I love about it is the half-ghoulish, half-frantic picking of each other's brains, trying to find out if we're normal writers, whatever that may be. Here we compare experiences, observe and comment on the oddities of the… Continue

'A Study in Red' Selected by Readers Club

I'm so pleased that 'A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper' was recently selected as the book of the month by a readers Book Club some thirty miles from my home. I didn't know anything about it until I was told by one of the members who I happened to meet socially. Consequently each of the Book Club members had to buy a copy, and it was then read and discussed by the membership. I'm pleased to say that they appear to have… Continue

Affable and trim

The last couple of articles about me and my books focus on the fact that I'm rather happy. In this month's Hadassah Magazine, I'm "affable and trim." High school friends reading this on Facebook may wonder where the affability was back then...

Bouchercon ruminations

I am loving Bouchercon, THE big event for mystery writers and fans. My panel this morning was very ut being an unknown author walking among giants today has made me philosophical. Two of the most basic laws of physics apply to human interaction as much as to inanimate objects.

Objects at rest tend to remain at rest due to inertia. Meaning that the universe itself naturally resists forward motion.

But objects in motion tend to stay that way too, thanks to momentum. Meaning… Continue

Silver Manticore in 1966

New Silver Manticore story here:

GLIMMERGLASS: The Creative Writer's Annual (Volume 1) is now available for purchase through the Bookemon.com website. Folks here will recognize some familiar names whose work appears in this publication - writers such as Roman Leary, P.J. Lozito, Dennis Power, Art Sippo, Michael Winkle and some nut named Small. (Three different Smalls, as a matter of fact - Joshua and William both have little writings in this, too.)

Okay, some great reviews. The book's been out for a year--now what?

So here I am sitting in front of the computer and writing this little ditty and thinking, "What's next?"

I've got a book out called Murderous Passions. But you (or many of you) already know that. It's not Literature and it's not trash--actually a few people have read it and liked it. And some sterling (and I do mean that sincerely) reviews have been posted on Amazon, in here, and on Barnes&Noble.

But the book is in the backwaters of nowhere as far as… Continue

Does Height Influence Crime?

In researching for my newspaper column on local history I came across an article about a psychological study conducted in 1934 at Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania.

The article was of interest for several reasons. One, because the penitentiary involved is in my home territory. Another was because of the quirky nature of the some of the results reported in the study.

The examination involved some 800 inmates and was conducted by the Public Health Service under… Continue

What Exactly Is "The Old Razzle-Dazzle"?

Whether we're considering quality of writing or branding or charisma, the problem is the same: personal differences. I gripe a lot here about writing that I consider bad, but obviously somebody liked/likes it, so I'm different from those people.

Readers look for different things from books, so what I want isn't necessarily what you want. I've learned to smile like Buddha and say nothing when people gush over their favorites, books I wouldn't read if you gave them to me along with… Continue

Location, location

Writers live in their heads. What may be travel to you is location-scouting for me. In some ways, I’m never where I am. I’m imagining that place on the page in a future book. It won’t exist until I’ve written about it.

I was standing on a deserted bridge across the Rhine in the Swiss town of Rheinfelden a couple of weeks ago in the evening twilight. The river flowed very fast. The rain was steady. It patterned the field-grey surface of the water in scattered patches, so that it… Continue
