Crime authors get to research all sorts of interesting things and last Saturday I spent a fascinating morning at the Fingerprint Bureau at Hampshire Police Support Headquarters at Netley, UK, learning how the fingerprints taken at the scene of crime and of people in police custody are identified. Although I'd researched this before and have had lots of advice from the Fingerprint Team I went there specifically to ask questions that relate to the…

Policing the Solent fiction meets crime fact on Deadly Waters

My fictional detective, DI Andy Horton, is based in Portsmouth and the Solent area on the South Coast of England. The Solent is the busiest waterway in Europe and one of the busiest in the world with around one million commercial and naval shipping movements and in excess of 10 million pleasure craft movements per year, so it's a brilliant area in which to set a series of crime novels, with plenty of inspiration and lots of activity.

The DI Horton marine mystery crime novels…

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!

Please excuse the double entendre, but we couldn't help it. These kinds of things don't come around every day you know. The fact that it's been SNOWING off and on here in Southern Oregon the last couple of days, and that a week ago today on April Fool's Day we got a surprise phone call from author Miranda Phillips Walker asking if she could come back home. Here's the backstory: Krill Press was founded in the fall of 2008 and our first title, "Absinthe Of Malice" by…

Invasion of Privacy

Apparently the police have come up with a clever ploy to gain entrance to your home when they have no reason in the world to do so. Their motive may be that they think they have reason to believe something illicit is going on, or again, it could simply be idle curiosity.

It works like this: Two uniformed officers appear at your door and say they had a 911 call from your address. You of course, explain that you did not make any 911 calls. They ask if your phone number is such-and-such and… Continue

(Cross posted from Working Stiffs)

Since I had last Wednesday off from my blogging duties, I didn’t get a chance to follow-up on the G-20 Summit. That’s just as well, I suppose, since the biggest part of the melodrama is still going on.

The expected violence and destruction of property was kept to a minimum, compared to what has happened elsewhere. Sure, there were some… Continue
