Peg Herring Tis the Season...to Not (R)

It's time to share what I hate about the Christmas season, and I make no excuses for it. I hate decorating. In late fall my friends and acquaintances start talking about "doing" the house, some with anticipation, some with resignation. I refuse. I don't like the clutter, I don't enjoy the disruption, and I see no reason to turn my house into a wannabe Wal-Mart. I realize this might put me in the grinch category, but otherwise I do okay. I arrange and conduct a huge Christmas concert for my tow… Continue

Peg Herring The Gift of Murder

I've probably mentioned I'm part of this year's Toys for Tots anthology from Wolfmont, titled THE GIFT OF MURDER. Now I can tell you that I recommend it, since I finished in this morning over breakfast. I'm pleased to have been included in the anthology, an entertaining mix of holiday crime stories. A great gift for the readers on your holiday list, since you get 19 chances to please instead of just one, and you support a worthy cause at the same time. Nice work, Tony Burton and editor John Fl… Continue

Peg Herring God Rest Ye Merry

"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas..." Check. "I'll be home for Christmas..." Check. "Christmas time is here..." Check. "Jack Frost nipping at your nose..." Check. So... "Have yourself a merry little Christmas!" Continue

joylene butler Time Traveling

Last night I dreamed I was transported back to the farm I grew up on. I sat at the kitchen table talking to my dad, who's been gone since 1983. I explained to him that I'd returned from the future. He gave me 100% of his attention, then asked some questions. When I told him I was married and lived on a lovely lake in central B.C., his beautiful blue eyes glazed over; I think he was picturing himself sitting on our deck or fishing in our lake. He looked sad when I told him his grandson was also a… Continue

Peg Herring Nice People

Before I forget, correction. I had the wrong figures on Friday. The quote calls for 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. The message is the same, just ignore the math. And thanks for noticing. Anyway, my thought today is nice people. There just aren't enough of them in the world, and I often wish I were better at being one. On Saturday a man I'd never seen before gave me the nicest compliment I've had in months. He did it just to be nice, and it made me think what a great place the world would… Continue

Peg Herring Not-Shopping: the Newest Craze

With a bad economy, not-shopping has become cool. Instead of people bragging about how they found the Toy of This Year's Quest for their little darling or the latest gadget-that-we'll-never-fully-decipher for their spouse, we hear comments about cutting back made with a tone of "I'm such a good person for doing this." Newspapers are full of chatty little articles about how to have a scaled-down Christmas: play board games at home instead of going on expensive vacations, create homemade gifts tha… Continue
