Pauline Rowson Optimistic and excited

I’ve been wrestling with the plot of my next Inspector Horton Marine Mystery crime novel over the last few days – hence the silence on my blog, and the silence around the house. I get so absorbed in it, that I find it hard to think of anything else. I’m just over two thirds of the way through writing the first draft and I’ve got to that stage where I need to know exactly where I’m going and with whom. You’d think I would have it all worked out by now, having written nearly seventy thousand words… Continue

Bryan Peerscribe.com

Hi everyone, I need your help with something… As a struggling novelist, I thought it would be cool to have an online space to kick around ideas, communicate with other writers, and workshop and practice my writing. What me and my old college roommate came up with is Peerscribe.com, a social network where you can use Web publishing tools to share your writing, find or create workshops that help you develop your skills, and gain legal ownership of your works in the process. It's still in the ver… Continue

Pauline Rowson Radio Phone-In and Ferry Crossing

My radio phone in interview with Alex Dyke on Wight FM on 16 April was lots of fun. It was great to talk to people via a phone-in and to answer questions they’d e mailed in regarding my novels and how I write. I'd love to do more radio phone-ins so hope I can link… Continue

Jane Cleland Staging the Scene: The Story Behind the New York Times Story

Each Sunday, The New York Times’ Real Estate section showcases a city residence. The feature is called “Habitat” and the articles don’t merely profile a residence; rather, the stories discuss how the space suits the people who live there. When my husband, Joe Stanko, and I learned that the New York Times was interested in featuring our apartment, one question came to our minds: Where in God’s name would we stash our stuff? If you’ve never lived in New York City, you don’t know what I’m talking… Continue

Peg Herring The Short Story vs Those Long Ones

People who don't write assume that short stories are easier than novels, and I suppose in a way they are. They're short, so there isn't the investment of time that a novel requires. Writing a short story takes days rather than months, and editing takes minutes rather than hours. Still, a short story isn't easy, and it has its own rules. First is a single plotline; the writer hasn't got time to dally with secondary characters or subplots. Focus has to be on a single story, and everything written… Continue

Pauline Rowson Someone's stolen my book title!

I opened the Sunday Times Culture Section this morning and scanned the television programmes for the week, looking for anything remotely interesting that I might be bothered to watch. Then I saw it. Someone had televised my thriller IN FOR THE KILL to be aired on Sunday… Continue

Peg Herring Dying in a Winter Wonderland

Remember last week, when I posted about songs getting stuck in my head? Well, here's another one. I'm part of a new anthology called DYING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND. It's very cool, and the profits go to Toys for Tots, which is also cool. The stories are all holiday-related; mine is called "Happy Holidays Times Three" and concerns three not-so-wise men who plan to profit from the holidays in a non-legal way. They run into a snag, however, in the form of a dead body that won't go away. I had a goo… Continue

Maggie Bishop Perfect for Framing by Maggie Bishop, Nov 2008

Are you tired of crowded highways, expensive gas and no adventure in life? Perfect for Framing is an easy read for pure escapism to the mountain vacation town of Boone, North Carolina. Returning for a second suspense-filled mystery, Jemma Chase and Detective Tucker find themselves embroiled in a Property Owners Association power struggle. Peg Herring Serendipitous Charity

How do you get involved with a charity? There are so many of them out there that there is no way a person can care about/contribute to/work for all of them, so most of us zero in on a few that are dear to us. But what's the appeal? I've just done a short story for a mystery short story anthology which will benefit Toys for Tots. When the call went out for submissions, I liked the theme (*Dying in a Winter Wonderland*), but I also responded to that charity. Why? We know they do good work; the Ma… Continue

Wilfred Bereswill Amerithrax Solved?

null In case you’re not familiar with the term Amerithrax, it’s the FBI’s code name for the investigation of the anthrax letters that killed five people and injured seventeen in the months following 9/11. Just recently, A person of interest, Dr. Bruce Edwards Ivins died of a drug overdose—an apparent suicide. Dr. Ivins was a resident of Frederick, Maryland, and a long-time… Continue

Pauline Rowson A View To Die For

Returned from London this morning after a reception held in Penguin Publishers office yesterday evening. Their offices are in the Strand and in what used to be the Shell building. The function room has a balcony overlooking the Thames and it was a scorching hot sunny evening with a view to die for. It looked out onto the London Eye, with the River curving its way past the Houses of Parliament on one side and up to St Paul's on the other. I only wish I'd had my camera. I could have stayed on the… Continue

Barbara Fister putting away the scissors and paste

I am trying to streamline my life a bit, so instead of trying to occasionally post to my blog here, I'm using the RSS feed gadget on my member page to feed items from my main blog. That means this is the last of me you'll see in the blog feed section of Crimespace's front page. (Hurrah! they all cried.) Thanks to Daniel for pointing out how to do this in the Crimespace FAQ.
