My panel appearance at CrimeFest 2014 was on Friday 15 May at 17.10 and the last panel of the day. Beforehand I spent some time catching up with some of my fellow crime writers and my publisher before taking tea and a delicious slice of Bara Brith Cake (Welsh fruit loaf) in the cafe in Bristol Library where I chatted to the librarians, delighted to hear that my crime novels are very popular with their readers.
After fortifying myself it was time to head for the Green Room in…

Time frames in novels, and particularly when writing a series, as I do with the DI Andy Horton novels, are a tricky thing. There is ‘real time’ and there is ‘fictional time’.
In ‘real time’ I write two DI Horton novels a year whereas in ‘fictional time’ the current novels are set over a period of sixteen months, which means there are an awful lot of murders in Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, making it…

August is traditionally a quieter month in terms of speaking engagements for me so it is a chance to get down to some hard graft on the writing front. I also have two speaking engagements in August and am delighted to be giving a talk…

Thrilled to see my guest essay on writers keeping the faith despite self-doubt on Psychology Today! Here's an excerpt:
"I’m ten years old. My Big Ben-style alarm clock has stopped working. Maybe I wound it too tightly, maybe it’s just worn out. Whatever the reason, the alarm hasn’t gone off in days.
I know I can fix it, if only I can get a look inside. When I tell my …

Like so many of us, while quick to learn some skills in other ways I seem to be a bit slow, especially if I don't just keep going way after having grown angry and frustrated...but calming down before even trying to proceed. One example of this is the time involved with catching on to things like blogging.
The Sheriff of Marion County is fed up with a local villain. With only half of what he needs to…
