"Nice Scarf," I heard behind me on the escalator at the Indianapolis Hilton.
I turned around very slowly. This was a compliment I had been fielding quite joyfully for the entire length of Bouchercon. This is what happens when you wear a bright yellow CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS scarf.
"Thank you, Harlan Cobin," I replied.
I also asked him out to lunch. He declined, very politely. Next time.
Bouchercon was a trip. Indianapolis is a weird city, like a 80's vision of the year 2000. Everything is c… Continue
Sphere: Famous Street Was Caught Between East and WestMerkel, who grew up in East Germany and was one of thousands to cross that night, recalled that "before the joy of freedom came, many people suffered."
She lauded Gorbachev, with whom she shared an umbrella amid a crush of hundreds, eager for a glimpse of the man many still consider a hero for his role in pushing reform in the Soviet Union.
THRILLER CROSSROADS provides some of the subtleties hidden behind the past decad… Continue

Raising the Dead Manuscript from Its Grave Part 1
by Robert W. Walker
I published myself after a lifetime of eschewing any sort of vanity press. And I did it using a “dead” manuscript about a “dead” subject filled with “dead” historical characters in a “dead” time period which one editor, a true pro, said of: “It is the hardest time period to write about, to make come alive, and especially to display any sort of sexual encounter, but in your hands Rob, if anyone can pull it off, it’s you.” That… Continue

Flutes and Flambeauxs
What is this strange land
Of flutes and flambeauxs
Dancing in the streets
To musak with strange beats?
It is the collage
Of cultures mixed
With French, Spanish, Creole
And international flare.
Have you seen the Indians
Of this partying town?
Yes, they call themselves Indians.
Dressed in flamboyant costumes
With beads and feathers
And painted faces.
Playing flutes and horns
Of mixed, music blends.
Dancing wildly
In the streets
Of the town
They call Novelle O… Continue

They say truth is stranger than fiction, I can tell you coming from a nursing point of view this is very true. I am reminding of this at least three times a week while I'm working in the Emergency Room, If I used any of these examples I would have to water them down because most people would think I was really off my rocker if I told the truth. With the release of my new book "The Well Meaning Killer" I'm starting to roll in some reviews, and some reviewers are questioning Megan McKenna's injury… Continue
Kia ora from Aotearoa everyone. I just wanted to direct your attention to a little competition I am running on my blog. We've already got several entries from the USA, and it would be great if we could get a few more, from anywhere around the world (the more entrants, the more prizes given).
I am currently running a competition on my blog where people (from anywhere around the world) can win a brand new copy of any NZ crime fiction title of their choice, delivered to them anywhere around the wo… Continue

To introduce the next of my Palestinian crime novels, THE FOURTH ASSASSIN, my friend videographer David Blumenfeld filmed in New York (where the book takes place). His montages are mainly from Brooklyn's Bay Ridge and Coney Island sections. He then recorded me, looking sweaty and frankly a bit doped up, in my favorite seedy cafe in Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter.
You can view it… Continue

I've been flying below the radar for a while. I've had my head down working and the result is a new book. DISGRUNTLED will be my next thriller and it will be hitting bookshelves next April.
Also, I've resurrected one of my old titles, DRAGGED INTO DARKNESS, which has been out of print since 2004. It was my first short story collection and it contains some of my favorite short stories. The book has been hard to find even secondhand, although someone is selling a used… Continue

Earlier this week I noted that I dislike writers describing a character as looking like a particular movie star. I cited a few examples from Elmore Leonard (which touched some nerves among fans of the Great Detroit Coolster) and one from Dan Brown. Now I bring you a real corker from The New Yorker.
The magazine's latest issue (at least the latest one to get through the Israeli postal system to me)… Continue

MYTHICA PUBLISHING notified me that the release date on my mystery novel MEMOIRS OF BEAR: Nueces Means Nuts has moved from the Coming Soon! status to a real target date. Release of the ebook and print book are scheduled for release on the 15th of June, 2009. I am sure that it won't hit Amazon for a few days later, but that is just the way their stocking system works.
Needless to say I am excited. I have all the jitters, second thoughts and twitches that go along with the launch of a firs… Continue

The New York Times features me in an article published this weekend about Global Post, the new foreign news website. As the Times explains, Global Post is intended to replace all the foreign news that's no longer produced by US newspapers, magazines and tv channels -- because those media "cut costs" and fired everyone.… Continue

In its listing of recommended books new to paperback, The New York Times features the second of my Palestinian crime novels A GRAVE IN GAZA, just out in softcover from Mariner/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. (The UK paperback, titled THE SALADIN MURDERS, has been out in small format for a while already.) Here's what the Times writes:
"Omar Yussef, an aging Palestinian… Continue
