It hasn't been easy watching the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on television.  Seeing images of wrecked homes and heartbroken people who have lost everything is never pleasant.  But there is one remarkable thing that takes place when these things happen: we all come together, remembering who we are, and what we can do to help.
This month I will be donating $1.00 from every…

Crime writing can be a messy process

So I have the idea. I do some research. I work it up into an outline plot with a smattering of characters and then I start writing. This is when it gets messy.

1. The brain dump or free flow

First up is the free flow type of writing when I'm eager to bring the idea and characters to life by getting words and actions on to my computer screen as quickly as possible. Often these are not the correct words, the description is hazy, the characters not fully formed, the grammar and… Continue

Blissfully blogless

Last weekend, my computer played up. Suddenly I couldn’t post the fascinating blog item I had written. I couldn’t update my Facebook page.

The computer gave me some kind of message about a “Flash” that had “crashed.” I’m old enough to remember the sputtering rockets of Flash Gordon in the 1950s series that was rebroadcast on the BBC in the early 1970s when I was a kid. That image held off my sense of powerlessness and frustration for about a half…

Motor sport, Palestinian style

Their politics might be spinning wheels, but Palestinians are revving engines on the race track.
NABLUS, West Bank — For a change, the Palestinians gathered on the main street of Nablus were happy to be going around in circles.

Palestinian politics makes a lot of noise, only to end up spinning its wheels, moving no closer to statehood or peace. But the same combination on the race track is attracting growing attention for the…

It's not what you might think -- in other words, it isn't detective fiction…

In Cold Daylight Now Published in Poland

In Cold Daylight was published in Poland today. Renamed Fire And Water ( Ogien i Woda) this is the second of my marine mystery crime novels to be published in Polish. It is always very exciting to see your work translated into another language and I was also thrilled to receive an e mail from Polish journalist, Anna Kutrzuba, who interviewed me for an article on the book's release. She's written a lovely piece and the article is laid out… Continue
