Karen from AustCrime 2009 Davitt Award Winners

At a fantastic night out and ceremony last night the Sisters in Crime 2009 Davitt Award winners were announced, wined, dined, feted and photographed. The nights festivities were highlighted by a chat between Sue Turnbull and Justice Elizabeth King of the Supreme Court of Victoria, some fabulous food and 130+ Sisters in Crime and Brothers in Law turning out on a cold Melbourne night to celebrate some absolutely fantastic authors and books. But without further ado - the winners of the categories… Continue

Richard Kunzmann Book Review: A Beautiful Place to Die, Malla Nunn (Picador)

There's a lot happening on the international crime fiction scene these days, and so much of it seems to be linked to Southern Africa. Roger Smith's hardboiled Mixed Blood has become a pressure-cooker story on the international front: German publish… Continue

Jane Cleland Staging the Scene: The Story Behind the New York Times Story

Each Sunday, The New York Times’ Real Estate section showcases a city residence. The feature is called “Habitat” and the articles don’t merely profile a residence; rather, the stories discuss how the space suits the people who live there. When my husband, Joe Stanko, and I learned that the New York Times was interested in featuring our apartment, one question came to our minds: Where in God’s name would we stash our stuff? If you’ve never lived in New York City, you don’t know what I’m talking… Continue

Darden North, MD ARE BOOKS AND BOOK SIGNINGS RECESSION PROOF? MAYBE THEY’RE JUST AN INVESTMENT OR, PERHAPS, EVEN A LITTLE FUN

Not often a factor analyzed by the national media as it dooms the national and global economy, book signings may be holding their own --- at least around here. Even as my third novel, FRESH FROZEN, was enjoying an October 2008 book release just as the economy was really tankin… Continue

Peg Herring Missing in Action

We've been without the internet for several days, which is always traumatic. The good news upon coming back is that I've learned that MACBETH'S NIECE will be published in large print in April. That's a good thing because as a "sweet" romance, it appeals to people who might need a bit of help eyesight-wise. Still, being "isolated" from web friends and colleagues is nerve-wracking. What am I missing, what should I be doing, who's trying to contact me? I'm currently doing a tiny-tour of Wisconsin,… Continue

Scott Nicholson Pen to Press Writing Retreat

June 5 I managed to pose with the lucky face of Hannibal at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans, though I am not sure which of us look most deranged. For the record, I'm not all that fond of liver. The city experience was bizarre--from the Disneyland quality of the French Quarter to the psychotic bums on the ferry landings, it definitely was rich and ripe and crowded. I don't know how Bourbon Street looked before the hurricanes, but I felt like taking a hot shower after walking through it. I guess… Continue
