The Eye of the Beholder (15)

“You look busy,” Tabitha said as she walked into the living room and saw papers and books scattered on the top of Preston’s desk and on the floor around him.

He turned to grin at her. “Three clients, three payments for preliminary work, yeah, I’m busy as a one-armed paperhanger.”

“Hot damn Pres, that’s great.” She headed to the kitchen, pausing momentarily when she realized that for the first time since he’d moved in Preston hadn’t started their day by trying to hide his… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (14)

Cary nodded as he read the email from Kelly Moriarty. He wasn’t surprised to find out that Moriarty wasn’t based Winterfield. In point of fact he’d have been surprised if he, or she, had been. As far as he was concerned the fact that all their business would have to be done by phone and computer would make his life a bit easier. Face to face meetings, Mr. Rickerson’s view to the contrary, had always struck Cary as a waste of valuable time as there were always the ‘niceties’ to get through, the… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (13)

“Damn it,” Preston muttered as he checked his email. “I knew I should have ignored that company but hell I never thought he’d be the one I'd have to deal with.”

Leaning back in his chair he started at the ceiling. ‘At least he doesn’t know it’s me’, he thought. ‘So, do I bite the bullet and work with him, ignore him, or just say I’m too busy to take on more business right now?

It suddenly occurred to him that he could at least ignore the request for a face… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (12)

Preston felt like a kid on Christmas morning as he and Tabitha walked down the snowy sidewalk to the park. He hadn’t realized until this moment how much he’d really missed being able to go outside. His eyes roamed over the people that passed him as he wondered why this one was smiling so happily or what that one was thinking so intensely that they seemed unaware of their surroundings.

When they got to the park he threw his head back and breathed deeply, savoring the sharp, fresh air… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (11)

“I don’t believe it. It’s only been three days and already there are several companies interested in my ideas,” Preston said, stretching to loosen the kinks in his back.

“See, I told you that you could do it.” Tabitha looked up from her book and grinned. “Preston Davison, soon to be king of website design and a multi-millionaire.”

He snorted derisively. “Not hardly but at least if anyone actually hires me it will keep us in beans and rice.”

“More like steak and… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (10)

“Fielding, my office, pronto,” Cary’s boss growled over the inter-office phone.

Cary sighed, wondering what now. For the past few weeks things had been tense at work. The company was loosing money due to the current economy and three people had already been laid off. He prayed he wasn’t the next to go. He and Hugh had finally, after a month of searching, found an apartment they both agreed was perfect for them. If he lost his job they’d be back to square one or worse. Like many… Continue

Preston rubbed a hand over his forehead, wincing as his fingertips felt the scars. “Not much that I’m actually able to do,” he grumbled. “I refuse to get hooked into stuffing envelopes.”

Tabitha chuckled. “Most of those as scams you know so yeah play keep-away from that.” She looked at the page he’d pulled up. “How are your writing skills?” she asked, tapping the screen.

“I only have a high school education, how do you think they are?”

“Preston,” she said… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (8)

“Just what are you doing?” Tabitha asked, coming to look over Preston’s shoulder.

“Trying to figure out what I can do to earn a living without having to leave home. I’m almost out of money and I won’t let you support me.”

She smiled at his calling her place home. In the past month, despite the fact that he had often been a total pain in the ass about things, she had gotten used to his being here. For the first week she’d done nothing when he wasn’t sleeping but feed him… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (7)

“Morning Tabby Cat,” Preston said, not turning from the computer to look at his friend and roommate. He always gave her time to wake up and get coffee before she had to face him.

“And morning to you Pres.” Tabitha was used to his ways now and didn’t push it, heading directly to the kitchen, asking as she went, “Did you eat anything?”

“Yeah, toast and juice.”

“Pres,” she growled.

“Not hungry right now, I’ll get something… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (6)

A month had passed since Preston’s disappearance. Cary had checked with everyone he knew of who knew his friend to see if he’d come to them or at least contacted them. He hadn’t.

When Cary finally got up the nerve to call Preston’s parents they were shocked at his news, which he’d expected they would be. They were also angry that someone in authority hadn’t let them know the moment it had happened. He’d had to explain that Preston had apparently refused to give the hospital any… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (5)

Cary stormed out of the hospital. He had to before he knocked every damned doctor there on their collective asses. How the hell had they let Preston leave? From everything he’d been told the man was in no condition to even get out of bed and yet they’d let him sign himself out.

Reaching the car he slammed his fist against the hood again and again until Hugh wrapped his arms around him from behind to stop him. “Not good news I take it,” his lover said calmly, refusing to relinquish… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (4)

Next Cary called Hugh. Forestalling Hugh’s questions about how his trip was going, Cary asked if he knew anything about what had happened to Preston.

“Only what I saw on TV.” Hugh had met Preston a couple of times after the first meeting at the street fair. Once he’d seemed to get it through his head that Preston and Cary really were just friends and nothing more he’d found he enjoyed Preston’s company. He thought he was amusing and very sexy even though not in the least his… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (3)

Cary flopped back on the hotel room bed, sighing in relief. It wasn’t that he hated business trips. He just… OK, he hated them. He missed his city, his apartment and his friends. Especially Hugh. They’d met a month ago at a street fair Preston had dragged him to and had hit it off immediately. It had taken only three dates until they’d fallen into bed. Cary was contemplating the idea of their moving in together, he was that smitten, but common sense said it was way too soon to broach the… Continue

The Eye of the Beholder (2)

Preston dropped Cary off at his place, wishing him a safe trip before pulling back into the minimal late night traffic to head to his own apartment. From the drop in temperature since he’d left the apartment earlier in the day he suspected that it was going to be snowing by morning. He hoped it would be light, he really hated driving in a storm and he had things he had to do, like get a new set of pictures that he could mail to some of the modeling agencies he knew of on the east and west… Continue

((A short mystery in 35 parts...Please be aware it is m/m))

“And then the shit hit the fan,” he said, stretching his long legs out, resting his feet on the seat across the booth from him.

Cary looked down at them and shook his head. “Manners Pres, manners. This is a high-class joint.”

Preston looked around and snorted. “Yeah I can tell by the peeling linoleum on the floor next to the counter and the greasy scum on the walls by the kitchen. Real high-class.… Continue
