Sandra Ruttan's What Burns Within is a Must Read

I haven't been reading much because pregnancy is taking its toll and this book has been on my to be read pile for a while. Well it was well worth the wait. Ruttan excels at writing a crime procedural that twists and turns and is a page-turner. What I love most about her is characters are full of integrity, but she also livens things up with complicated sub-characters who act as villains and propel the action forward. It's also peppered through with social commentary as the characters interact wi… Continue

Baby Shark's High Plains Redemption by Robert Fate

I first discovered Robert Fate via a Spinetingler review and have been enjoying the series since. In this latest ins… Continue

The burden of unique names

There's a trend that's been pissing me off no end and inspired by this article I thought I'd get if off my chest. I work in a community health centre and among the services we provide is Maternal Child Health. As parents come in to see the nurse, I tick off their name that they have arrived and as result I get to see the new trend of giving children a 'unique' name. In most instances this involves giving the child a tradition… Continue

Advice for unpublished writers: My successful query letter

Josephine Damian who is on my daily must read blog roll did a post about query letters. She referenced an agent who says he's been receiving terrible query letters and this is possibly due to the e-query process. In the comments I wrote an essay-long comment and thought I'd post my query letter in case anyone can get any use out of it. As I said… Continue

My 2007 Reading List

I read 78 books in total. I've allocated each book to one genre so I can do an overview of my reading habits. You can see how I categorised each by my complex coding system.

I don't think I will read this many books again. Last year I didn't write much writing and was just seeing out the year. In 2006 I read 52 books, so I'm by 26 books this year. My resolution next year will be to blog more about my reading. I'm usually too quick to reach for the next book to take the time to blog. Vie… Continue

Book Rave: Baby Shark's Beaumont Blues by Robert Fate

I came across this series by reading a review in Spinetingler. The premise of the first book in the series Baby Shark hooked me from the start. Kristin Van Dijk is left for dead after a gang rape by a biker gang in the 1950s. Out for revenge she trains herself in the killing arts.

Baby Shark's Beaumont Blues picks up the series two years later. Kristin is 21 years old and a partner in a private eye firm. On the case to find a missing… Continue

What sort of a writer are you?

I've been thinking lately about the possible direction of my future writing career. The novel I am submitting for publication is a young adult novel. I'd never set out to be a young adult writer. My first writing project was a romance novel. After torturing myself for three years I completed it and decided not to submit for two reasons:
1. It was no damn good.
2. I didn't want to be a romance novelist.

I started working on The Wog Manual because the idea came to m
