Austin S. Camacho's Blog (997)

I’M EVERY WRITER…you’re all in me

When I began this blog I promised to make it personal and talk about what was going on in my writing life. I figure that will involve sharing the actual metrics – how many words written, events attended, submissions made – but that data will require some context. What kind of writer am I? Well actually, I’m all kinds.

I am a Print on Demand author. Two of my novels were first published by a POD publisher and…

What Keeps Me Going

At book signings, negative people and the idly curious sometimes ask me, “With so many writers out there, what makes you think you’ll be a success?” Positive people and aspiring authors often ask me who my inspirations are in the business. Today I might be able to answer both those questions.…

Meet me in Northern VA

If you happen to live in my area I want you to know that tomorrow I'll visit a new shopping area, at least new for me. It's the Dulles Town Center and I'll be a guest of the Borders Express there. I'll be there from 2 pm to 6 pm and I have to wonder if anybody will still be returning their Christmas gifts. No matter. If you stop by the store while I'm there - at 21100 Dulles Town Circle, Dulles, VA - mention you read about it in my blog and I'll have a special gift for you.

Read more - spend less

Often I use this space to introduce you to great reads or to point you to web sites where you can find them. Today I want to show you how to save money on your book habit. I've discovered Smart Bookfinder.com, - http://www.smartmediafinder.com/buybooks - a price comparison search engine for Internet users. Just type in the title or author you're interested… Continue

Reading for charity

Now here's some cool news. The folks at a web site called Simegen have gotten on the Toys for Tots bandwagon, supporting sales of the "Carols and Crimes, Gifts and Grifters" anthology put out by Wolfmont Publishing. None of the writers got paid for their contributions to this holiday collections and, despite the date, all profits from the sales still go to the Toys for Tots foundation. You can go to their web site - …

Have we started yet?

Well, here it is the first weekend of the New Year and already I'm having trouble keeping pace with my ambitious goals. But I'm not getting discouraged. I figure the sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

How is everybody else doing with their writing/marketing goals?

Tired but happy

My writer’s year kicked off Friday with an early morning book signing at the Borders store in Baltimore Washington International Airport. I must admit I was surprised that anyone was conscious at 6 am, but in fact for those three hours several people came up to talk, and to buy my…

Read the opening chapters of new mysteries for free!

So many books… so little time. If only you had time to find the right ones. Of course that would require you to pick them up and read a couple of pages to know if they appeal to you, but who has time to do such a thing? Well, YOU do, if you do it the smart way. That would be by joining an OnLine Book Club at Dear Reader.com.…

The New Year - Beginnings and Conclusions

The home team has spent the last week or so building a plan for 2008 intended to break my writing into the mainstream outside my home area. We ended up considering what seemed like hundreds of options, each with a long decision tree. Mailings? Sure, but to who? Where? When? How many? What will the postcard say? And that's just one tiny bit of the puzzle. But we have arrived at a conclusion.…

The latest

In the last couple of weeks I enjoyed two very different book signing experiences. First, I visited the Borders bookstore in Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This one was easy, since the store is on the concourse before the security gates, unlike the other airport stores I’ve signed in. It’s also right at the bottom of the escalator people come down on their way to one set of gates. I saw a lot of people that day, but many of them were rushing to catch…

VIEW THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE - YOU COULD WIN A PRIZE!

As you can see on my page here, I made a little video promo for my flagship novel, "Blood and Bone." Well it's also on YouTube now and I'm ready to go viral. No, I don't want to infect you with a bug, but a video "goes viral" when people pass it around like a bad cold. To do that I need your help. You only need to do three things, and none of them costs you anything but a couple minutes.

First, go to this link - … Continue

AND THE WINNERS ARE....

Life has been very exciting since I last posted a blog. First, I had great fun giving my one-day class on creating characters. The small but lively group of writers dug into the exercises with gusto, and seemed to want to hear what I had to say.

I also learned, and can now announce, the winners of the Austin Camacho Beltway Crime Contest! Crime and Suspense editor Tony Burton is a tough audience, but the stories he chose are all gems. Let me send out loud congratulations right now to… Continue

Smiles from Saturday Signing

I've had fun signing my novels at Borders Express in Springfield Mall before, but never as much fun as I had Saturday. This time I joined two other local authors to present our novels to new readers and many who already knew one writer's books but not the other two. It is always great to tell people about my writing, but it's a different kind of fun to present someone else's work and to hear other writers talk about my own.

One of fellow authors, Candice Poarch, is a prolific writer of… Continue

Meet me in Springfield, VA!

Tomorrow I will return to the Borders Express in Springfield Mall for a rather special book signing. Store manager Dan has always been friendly toward local authors and has had very good results with four of us in particular. It seemed a natural follow-up to host us all together.

So tomorrow all four of us will visit the store at the same time. We'll be there from noon to 5 pm, talking to each other's fans and whoever else wanders within our sight. It's always a party…

Are ya listed?

There are lots of ways for readers to find a new writer they want to try, but perhaps the easiest is to look them up in the Yellow Pages. Specifically, I recommend the Author Yellow Pages web site. AuthorYellowPages.com is a searchable directory of author websites. After years of hearing from readers who wanted easy access to authors and their websites, The Book Report Network created this website where authors list their official and publisher websites, as well as fan and…

The Law of Unintended Consequences

One of the unintended consequences of the rise of the internet is that some great writing travels the world uncredited. Once in a while I see a line so beautiful that I search for the source, usually in vain. Yesterday I spotted a line that I wish I had written, and soon learned that tons of others agree with me, because it's on a lot of web sites and slides. The simple sentence:

"There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to…

I signed, I got published, I chilled out!

Last week was quite the roller coaster ride for me. My Independence Day began with a successful book signing at the Waldenbooks in Landmark Mall. Mall traffic was lighter than usual, but the store manager told me when I left that I had been responsible for 24 percent of the day's sales. I rode that joyous news back home to a wonderful cookout with a small collection of good friends.

The weekend brought less exciting news. My schedule seems to have overloaded the book distributor's… Continue

Book Flix?

I'm not sure if this is bad news for writers, but I may have found the answer for all my friends who tell me they love to read but don't have another square inch on their bookshelves at home. If you once found movie DVDs crowding you out of your home, you have probably discovered Netflix by now. Booksfree - http://www.booksfree.com/ - does the same thing for paperbacks and audio books. They have more than 96,000 titles, shipping is free both ways and,… Continue
