Meet Me On Line Tomorrow

You'd have to be in Virginia to see me today at the Borders store in Dulles Town Center. But no matter where you are we could talk tomorrow.

Monday night I will be proud to be a guest on a blog talk radio program called Book Bridge: From Authors To Readers. The fifteen minute segment is a specialty program for African American authors to talk about how their books cross genres and appeal to a broad and varied audience. The show begins at 8:30PM Eastern and you're all invited to call… Continue

REMINDER - Meet me this weekend

I told you that today I’m at the Borders in BWI airport.

TOMORROW I’ll meet new friends at one of the Books-A-Million stores in Alexandria, VA. That signing is from noon to 4 pm. Even though I used to live in Alexandria I’ve never signed books there so this will be extra fun. Make sure you come to the right store. It’s the one at 6230 N. Kings Highway.

Then Sunday I return to familiar ground at the Borders store in Dulles Town Center. The mall is at 21100 Dulles Town… Continue

I have an unusually busy weekend coming up, but busy in a very good way with lots of chances to meet and greet readers in Maryland and Virginia.

It all starts tomorrow when go to meet travelers at the Baltimore Washington International Airport. The busy time is from 3 pm to 7 pm, and that’s when I’ll be there signing my novels. If you happen to be flying into or out of the area, look for me at the airport Borders store.

Environmental Awareness

At the most recent writer’s conference I had lots of chances to chat with what one writer called “my fellow lunatics” about why we choose to use our precious time committing fiction. One author said that writing mysteries was the only way he knew to escape.

“Escape what?” I asked.

“My padded cell.”

“You’re not really in a cell.”

“Sure I am,” he said. “At work. Nine to five. You know a cubicle is just a padded cell without a door.”

Deadly Aftermath

There is no better time than surrounding yourself with mystery authors in a warm, friendly setting. The Deadly Ink conference offered all of that in a hotel that could have been mistake for a medieval castle. It was also a chance for me to learn from my fellow crime writers. The most important things I learned in those three days were:

Even if you don't think your protagonist is autobiographical, if you look closely enough you see yourself in him or her.

A panel of six… Continue

Meet Me this Weekend in New Jersey

I'll spend this weekend with mystery fans and fellow authors at the Deadly Ink Mystery Conference. The conference is chaired by two of the editors at Deadly Ink Press, but they don't play favorites. This year Jane Cleland (Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery Series) is the Guest of Honor, with Troy Cook (The One Minute Assassin) serving as… Continue

Books Better than TV

If you enjoy television mysteries then you're probably already hooked on "Bones." But if you haven't read Dr. Temperance Brennan's 10 print adventures you're missing most of the fun. And you can already order #11, Devil Bones, at Amazon even though it won't be released until August.

On television Brennan is a forensic anthropologist and… Continue

Elsewhere on the Web

Mystery author Morgan Mandel started Book Place as a literary social site, networking authors, readers, publishers, editors, agents, reviewers, librarians, and any other book-loving people. At Book Place, promotion is encouraged. There's a button labeled "ALL AUTHORS" that you can get a listing of us authors who have built a page on the site. Then just click the author you'd like more info about. We writers can send in a jpeg or… Continue

Great weekend Conference

Yesterday was a great chance to hang with some of my favorite local authors at the final Washington Independent Writers annual convention. This is the last one only because next month that organization becomes the American Independent Writers - a local professional group that, with more than 1200 members, is going national. I particularly enjoyed the fiction writers’ presentation where John Gilstrap and… Continue

Father's Day Greetings!

Happy Father’s Day to all the other dads out there. I hope those you helped get a start in life remembered you and sent you a little gift, or a card, or made a phone call to thank you for your selfless service through the years. Of course, the kids I raised are all way too busy moving forward with their lives to think of such things.

Well, actually one daughter, Chrystal, did call to wish me a happy day. And my son Adam has a good excuse, being in a nuclear submarine for the next few… Continue

Meet Me in DC Tomorrow

Tomorrow I’ll gather with the cream of local writers at the Washington Independent Writers annual convention. For many, this year’s WIW conference, "The Writing Life: Where We Are and Where We Are Going," will be a chance to pitch their latest work to agents. For me, it will be a day to attend workshops to learn more about my craft and

meet with other writers.

Speeches and workshops begin at 9 am.… Continue

Mystery and More in a New Novel

Believe it or not, not everyone loves a good mystery novel. Some

people prefer science fiction books. Still others like horror novels.

Can you imagine a book that would satisfy all those readers?

Well, you don't have to. Just get into the series Mario Acevedo is

writing about vampire private eye Felix Gomez. Yes, I know there's a

vampire private detective on TV right now, but so far he hasn't

encountered any aliens, and that's just what happens in… Continue

The Devil you say...

I love a good, snappy comeback.

In one of the bookstores recently I observed two coworkers who were not working together very well. The younger fellow seemed to be thwarting the more mature woman at every turn, although it was clearly unintentional. At one point he tried to help her stack books on an end cap and somehow managed to spill books across an entire aisle. Trembling with frustration she said, "You were sent here by the devil himself just to destroy me, weren't… Continue

Latest appearance - live and on line

Saturday I braved 97 degree heat to journey to my first book signing at a Books-A-Million store. The store, at Potomac Mills, is a huge one, and because we are still learning each other, Books-A-Million ordered only one title, my flagship book, Blood and Bone. But even without multiple sales, I met a great number of new friends and signed quite a stack of books. I think that this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Sunday it was back to Borders, this time in Waldorf,… Continue

This Weekend's Fun

this weekend I've got a double-header. I'm finally working with Books-A-Million this summer and I'm starting with the store in Potomac Mills. Saturday I'll sign my novels there starting at 11 am. Since this is my first visit there I'm not sure how long the books they ordered will last. Stop by during your summer shopping. The store is at 2700 Potomac Mills Cir, Woodbridge VA.

And not to slight my Maryland friends, I'll head for the Borders Books and Music in Waldorf on Sunday. That… Continue

Another Great Mystery Novel

Those who know me well will tell you that my love of music comes close to my love of a good mystery. So it's a pure joy to find a writer who handles both my great artistic loves with flair.

I met Raymond Benson briefly at a writer's convention, but it took me until now to get around to his rock and roll thriller, A Hard Day’s Death. Spike Berenger, who runs Rockin' Security, has to… Continue

Fact from Fiction

Saturday I spent time at a book signing with an author who had written

a political thriller connecting a Black presidential candidate to a

century-old conspiracy involving Lincoln's assassination. I love fiction with a sound

historical base, but this kind of thing does bring out the more

extreme conspiracy theorists, a few of whom felt the need to explain

to us all that was obvious to them about underground power, racial

suppression, hidden Middle East machinations… Continue
