It should be both. Pain and pleasure. In the beginning a revision/rewrite is kinda of exciting. Something in the writing cropped up unexpectedly. But after the last rewrite--after the book has been put to bed--to go back and rewite more is a bummer. At some point in time, you just get tired of reading the same damn thing over, and over, and over.

Well, revisions (incl. rewrites) are necessary. Before submission, they are part of the creative process. When the book comes back with editor's suggestions, the experience is often embarrassing. For me, this happens usually two or more years after I finished the book (I've always had books waiting so far) and I'm unpleasantly surprised by some of my writing. Of course, I've also had editorial suggestions that were just plain wrong. And that is a major aggravation because you don't want to seem…
