<p>The 5-6,000-word range was a new experience for me, and I'm grateful to have had the chance to be a part of the Author's Lab series. I'd been on either side of the counts before, with flash fiction and a full-length novel. I liked those extremes, and considered anything between them too awkward to explore. I was more surprised than anyone when I found writing a short story could be a lot of fun.</p>
