Back to Nature: A THRILLING trip to the library

Yup, I hit the library every day. I check out audios and DVD's. Normally a very uneventful trip, to be sure, but Friday was a whole nother kettle of fish. Well, not really fish. One never thinks that the library is a place closely associated with the creatures of nature, but let me tell you a story.

I'm in the back of the library (DVD section) and all is peaceful--as it should be in the library. All of a sudden, I hear this incredible pounding at the front of the library.…

Stalking Alifair Burke

Hear ye, hear ye. Please accept this as formal notification that I am Alifair Burke's official stalker. I do solemly swear to drop her name shamelessly at every opportunity (she can tell you that I once offered her my left arm--one of my more humiliating moments at Bouchercon in Chicago when I first met her at her signing--anyway), I will tirelessly follow her around the Internet and tell people that we are bosom buddies, that she adores me, and that she is every bit the talented writer that…

Book signing, author events, or book parties?

As long as I have been reading, I love going to author events and books signings. I used to own a bookstore and that was one of my favorite things to do...I've hosted events by tons of authors including Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Denise Swanson. I just love chatting with the authors and getting to know them and I love getting books signed. I have autographed copies from James Lee Burke, Alifair Burke, Joe Konrath, Robert Goldsborough, Jill Barnett, Tasha Alexander, Julia Buckley, David…

Winning over readers?

I have been reading for longer than I can remember. I will read anything...books, papers, shampoo bottles...do you know how much information is actually on the plastic around new toilet paper? Oy!

At any rate, there was a time when I would just pick something up and read. I think we've all been there. I know a few people who still are. They will literally read whatever they pick up first. I have become much more selective. Perhaps it is maturity...hmmm...naaah! I think it is…

Favorite Author and Why

When I came up with that subject, I thought it would be easy. Now I fear I have to actually pick one. But I can't so I will pick two.

I'd say my favorite would be James Lee Burke. When I read my first Burke book, I was blown away. The man is a genius with words. He is one of very few authors that writes in first person who I enjoy, I don't think most authors get the full point of first person...it's about being in one person's head! Burke is a master, I can't think of any…

I remembered it (Book Place) and I'm trying to have a presence there too. And beefing up my profile on Facebook. My MySpace page is still in limbo. I need to find someone I can pay to modify it. Slow, steady inroads ....along with everyone else!

Hi Karen
I've been reading your posts on DL and MMA and wanted to say hello. Also, you mentioned another crime writer site recently, and I thought I bookmarked it, but now I can't find it or remember the name.

Karen-- Thanks for your note. And right back at you! Without Twin Peaks there would never have been a Lost or a Sopranos. Exciting TV and a crucial cultural event. And, yes, Kozo ROCKS!! I lived in MD for several years (St. John's College and JHU for grad school in writing). Next time I'm in the neighborhood, I could look you up. Kindred spirits!!

Hi, Karen. I love hearing about people's Adventures in the Library. Of course, I have them five days a week, but mostly they involve bipedal mammals. And usually not the police and Animal Control at the same time. THAT'S an adventure!
