I don't disagree with anything she said.  I do think that she doesn't give enough weight to the destructive power of discouragement in this business and that it can derail anyone.  Even people with the drive and the dream.  It has an impact on all writers to one degree or another, unless they happen to be deranged.

I think of one of my favorite writers, David Goodis, but the names are endless.  Looking in from the outside it seems like booze, etc. was their downfall.  The real catalyst for many of them, I believe, was the discouragement and disappointment of a crazy business.  I know myself, after shopping around 5 novels and short stories 20 years ago, I let discouragement knock me out of the box.  It was my fault; I know that.  A few months later I got a $750.00 check for a short story I sent to Boys' Life.  The editor said she wanted to assign me other stories and work with me.  It was too late; I had made irreversible decisions.

Fortunately, because of the internet, authors today, no matter how physically isolated from the rest of the writing community, have access to other writers.   Because of this they can warn each other about the occupational hazards, including discouragement, and how to deal with them.

Wish Kris had spoken a bit more about this because it can hit anyone, at anytime.  Even her.
