Of course, his characters usually go right to the precipice of the fantastic and occult, then stay in bounds of reality. If they went over, I wouldn't read him. But they don't, so they maximize the extremes of humanity, making them kind of fascinating.

Robert B. Parker ran into a similar problem with his Spenser series. It's hard to keep the characters and dialogue from becoming repetitive when an author does so many books in the same series. Even so, this was one of Burke's best overall.

Read it two weeks ago. My favorite crime novelist. Classic Robicheaux, without the Louisiana setting. But as I mentioned in an earlier post, the characters are beginning to sound alike, so glib, colorful in language, all like gifted speakers. The master slips.
