Profile

Hometown:
Glasgow, Scotland
About Me:
I was born at an early age and led a sheltered childhood in a small English village. A crime fiction fan from a young age, I wanted to be one of Enid Blyton's Famous Five and fight crime with the aid of only a basket of cucumber sandwiches and a bottle of ginger beer. I spent my spare time following mysterious strangers around the village - especially those with cockney accents and a couple of days' growth of stubble - until a complaint from the new local vicar put a stop to my sleuthing career. I then decided I wanted to be Nancy Drew - I coveted her cool friends, her dashing boyfriend, her understanding father and her lovely car. Sadly, after re-reading one recently I discovered that either Nancy or I had changed - she was a pompous prig, her friends were whiny and self absorbed, her father was uncaring and her boyfriend was a wet drip. I still liked the car though.

I now live in Glasgow, where I havea thrilling dual career as a mild-mannered pension consultant by day, and an unemployed superhero by night. For relaxation I listen to Dean Martin, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Ramones, and enjoy salsa, cha cha cha and merengue - despite having two left feet

One-Eyed Donna

Well, it was the first full day of Bouchercon yesterday. I didn't make any panels in the morning, instead learning the ins and outs of the US postal system to send some books to Alaska in time for my arrival. The theory was that it would make my over-the-weight-limit luggage back into normal territory again. Sadly, I have replaced the books I sent with more books, so my cunning plan was foiled. I also went to Walgreens. For some reason I LOVE American drug stores. So I spent $100 on crap I don't… Continue

The Dodo Has Landed

Well, I am here safe and sound in Baltimore. And I know that this will come as a shock to anyone who knows me, but SO IS MY LUGGAGE! Yes, this time it didn't take a wee side trip to somewhere else on the way. And the whole trip went very smoothly, despite arriving in Amsterdam 5 minutes after my plane to Washington started boarding. I have to say that I love Washington Dulles Airport. They have these little sheds on wheels with pneumatic lifts that look like trailer trash tanks and which take yo… Continue

All Points West To Alaska

Well, it's time to dust off the old blog in preparation for my upcoming trip to Bouchercon in Baltimore and then on to Alaska (well, it was a good excuse since Baltimore is on the way to Alaska, right?) Continue

Harrogate - or "Donna, don't take this the wrong way, but I can really see you in a brothel."

Well, that's me just returned from Harrogate where a good time was had by all at the Harrogate Crime Festival. This time I didn't get to see many events, spending most of my time hanging out, chatting and eating...lots of eating. The panels that I did go to were good, and the evening events were great fun, even if our quiz team - The Masturbating Hamsters - came somewhere in the middle of the pack in an undistinguished manner. It was great to catch up with everyone, and spend loads of time with… Continue

Hi Donna-Did we ever settle on a day for your book review? Keeping track of these things is making me feel scattered. If it's become a problem for you timewise, we can postpone indefinitely. Thanks, Patti

Hi Donna,

It's a combination of Evelyn Waugh, Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen. Would love to get your opinion on it?

How about either the 11th or the 25th then. I can post it on my blog. I usually post a few each week on there. Just pick a good week for you and send it to me Wednesday or Thursday so I can get them formatted. Thanks so much.

Hi Donna-I wonder if you'd be willing to do a "forgotten book" for my blog project on July 18th? To see what I'm talking about, check out http://pattinase.blogspot.com
Thanks. Patti

Hi, Donna

Yeah, I had the privilege of speaking briefly with Mr. Prather shortly before he passed away.

Dreech...I love it and it has just become my favorite new word! Too bad I didn't know it before I took a Taser hit in my citizen police academy class tonight. Maybe I could have gotten it our between my clenched teeth. Instead, I chose to say, "Stop it." Not much unless you consider that most people can't speak when 50,000 volts of electricity are shooting through their systems. That will clear up any "dreech" in a hurry!!

Hi Donna. Love the title of your novel.

I see you work in the pensions field. Me too, on the legal side of things. Maybe we should have a game of paper, scissors, stone to see who gets to write the first crime novel set around the exhilirating theme of contracting out?

Best wishes
Chris

Hi, Donna, how is your ankle holding up? I just got back from seeing Craig Ferguson do his stand up routine at one of our not too lovely Indian casinos an hour east of my town.

I laughed and laughed and really needed to. It has been a blasted long and difficult winter. Unfortunately, Mr F. has been so long in America that his banter was all about Los Angelos and Hollywood and just a bit about Sean Connery. Nothing about the homeland except to say that "damp" is a color in Glasgow. Still it was worth the drive and the smokey, taudry -building filled with aging zombies (yours truly, not included) to laugh long and hard. Hurry Spring!
