In BLOOD AND BONE - An eighteen-year-old boy lies dying of leukemia. Kyle's only hope is a bone marrow transplant, but no one in his wealthy Virginia family can safely supply it. His last chance lies in finding his father, a man who disappeared before he was born. Police and private investigators can find nothing on a trail eighteen years cold.

Kyle's family has nowhere to turn until they learn of a certain troubleshooter, a self-styled knight errant in dark glasses named Hannibal Jones. He has two weeks to find the missing man, but his search turns up much more: A woman who might be Kyle's illegitimate sister, the woman who could be her mother, and the man who may have killed Kyle's father.

Hannibal follows a twisting, winding path of deception, conspiracy and greed, from Washington to Mexico, pursuing the truth. But with each step closer to it he gets, the danger grows.

CAtch my Presentation in Baltimore Tomorrow

Bouchercon continues with more special events. For example, tomorrow I’ll give a presentation about "Why We Love Crime Fiction" at 2 pm at the Canton Library, 1030 S. Ellwood Avenue and O'Donnell St. in Baltimore. The setting couldn't be more appropriate -- the Canton Library was the nation's first branch library back in 1886, and on the outside it looks like the perfect setting for a Victorian mystery. After the talk, I will be signing copies of my novels at a reception featuring homemade refre… Continue

New Holiday Mystery Anthology

I’ve already told you that today thru Sunday I’ll be at Bouchercon in Baltimore. Now I want to tell you about one of the books I’ll be pushing there. For the third year in a row, Wolfmont Press has released an anthology of winter holiday crime fiction to benefit the Toys for Tots program. “Dying in a Winter Wonderland,” is also the second such collection to feature a new Hannibal Jones story. But don’t order the book just for that. It f… Continue

It's all happening in Baltimore this week!!

This week is all about Bouchercon - the biggest mystery fan and writer event of the year. The four-day extravaganza featuring guests of honor like Lawrence Block and Laura Lippman kicks off Thursday morning. I'm on a panel at 10 am on opening day called THE RIDDLE on which I and four other authors will discuss the art of challenging the reader. It all happens at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel, 101 West Fayette Street, Baltimore, MD.

My Guest Blog Today

In conjunction with Bouchercon - THE mystery fan's event of the year - I was invited to be a guest blogger on Read Street, the Baltimore Sun's book blog. My entry about African American private investigators went up yesterday. I promise it will be interesting, so please read my guest blog, and leave me a comment. Thanks!

Too punny not to share

Being a lover of word play I had to smile when I came upon this headline: Energizer Bunny arrested - charged with battery. Delicious! And a great reminder that playing with the language doesn’t have to serve any purpose. A good pun is its own reword.

Did you come up with Hannibal's given name before or after Harris's Hannibal Lecter? I ask only that Harris's villain's name casts some rather dark aspersions on any other character attempting to overcome the cannibal's stigma.

Oh, most assuredly a good thing. I guess the stories left her in a very pleasant mood when they were finished.

Is that a good or a bad thing? :-D

Austin, thank you very much for accepting my invitation.

You obviously know your Doctor Who. Still hard for me to believe Captain Jack might be/probably is The Face Of Boe. That was mind-boggling for me.

I hate to admit it, but I was totally ignorant of your books until I came across your profile here on Crimespace, but the Hannibal Jones series sounds like it'd be right up my alley....

So I'll soon be picking up a copy of Blood And Bone. Really looking forward to it.

Thanks. It was reassuring seeing at least one familiar face besides Geneva's. Otherwise, it would have been weird, Hollyweird or not. Nice reconnect.

Serendipity rules!

I stopped by my local independent mystery bookstore today to pick up the latest John Sandford, and right there next to the register was a lonely, pristine copy of BLOOD AND BONE. No thanks to gas prices, I'm now budgeting for books more carefully than a year ago, but I swear that book was singing my name, softly but persistently. What other course was left open to this humane reader? I took the homeless book away with me. I showed it the shelf that eventually (post-reading) will become its permanent home. I won't go so far as to say the book smiled, but the pages sure did flutter.

Well, we mustn't confuse activity with progress, L.J., but I do seem to be doing something right and getting readers. As Eeyore would say, "Thanks for noticing." :-)
