Vachss' A Bomb Built in Hell

I just finished reading _A_Bomb_Built_In_Hell_, Andrew Vachss' first novel, written in !973 but unpublished until 1999. I've long been a Burke devotee, but I stumbled upon a link to ABBIH on the wikipedia hardboiled page. It is Wesley's story, and parts of it have been cannibalized (Vachss' word) in some of his other early novels. It is available as a free PDF download at:

A Touch of Noir

A few weeks ago I got a crimespace friend request from Jack Bludis. He astutely surveyed my "likes" and recommended the Yahoo Group Rara Avis (rare birds), a group dedicated to the discussion of hardboiled and noir writing. I've been hanging out, you might say lurking, ever since. It's an entertaining and informative group. There're around 600 members and there're around 600… Continue

A Summer Of Reading and Writing

I had a golden opportunity this summer and I decided to take it. My company changed hands and I had a chance to walk away and take the summer off. Yeah, I could have stayed and made just as much money, worked with the same people (whom I actually like), done the same job, had roughly the same life. Instead, I cashed my options, paid some bills and took the summer off. My goal was to write the sequel to my first POD novel, unReQuiTeD. Somewhere along the line, my plan went awry, but in a g… Continue

Giant Steps- Writer to Author (repost from typepad)

If only someone had told me years ago...

I started out the way most people do, with a keyboard (substitute binder, journal, scrap of paper, you get the picture) and just started typing. I was thirty-something at the time, just plugging in my first computer, and the words came so easily. It was like a dam had built up over the last three decades and the water came crashing down through the valley, taking out e

Thanks for reading it. I'm not much of a short story writer but the HELL OF A WOMAN story is one of my better efforts.

Hi Terry
I see that Michael Connelly is at the top of your list too.
What did you think of The Overlook?

I took two runs at *Fortress of Solitude*. Still in the To-Be-Read pile, but towards the bottom now.

I like your author list (sounds like mine!). I'd like to recommend you take a look at the late, great Fredric Brown. Also James Sallis' *Drive* is brief, but masterful.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the invite. I would like to attend Killer Nashville next time. I am building a summer place 90 miles east.

Not sure if you've read *No Country for Old Men* but it's another of Cormac McCarthy's winners. The last 40 pages have little to do with the story, but they do explain the title. Because of his strong writing, I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end.

Your choices of writers, terrific, movies, not too shabby either. I've been trying to get a DVD of *Memento,* but none of the local Blockbusters have it.

Terry, as a fan of all of those guys, I hope you know about the Yahoo list Rara_Avis ... excellent discussion about hardboiled and noir.

Terry, I'm more likely to travel to Nashville than Ft. Lauderdale, but thanks for the information. Maybe I'll see you there next year!

OK, what's Killer Nashville? Is this something I should know about and attend? I write romantic suspense.
