Hey folks,

As you may be aware, Ning.com, the company who provides the servers and service for Crimespace to run on, charge an annual fee.

The fee is $USD 239.90, and although I do receive donations at times, I'm well short of that target this year. Most years I've been a little short but I don't run this for profit so it's not usually a problem.
I've had to upgrade CrimeSpace's theme to match the new software Ning is using, so expect a few tweaks over the next few days as I do my best to get it back to normal.

Ning Now Charging To Run CrimeSpacetag:crimespace.ning.com,2010-07-21:537324:Topic:2426892010-07-21T00:23:24.982ZDaniel Hatadihttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/danielhatadi
As you all may already know, Ning, the company whose servers and software power CrimeSpace, has decided to start charging for the service. Looking at the plans available, the only sensible option was the Ning Plus plan, which is $US199.95 a year. On this plan, I can see only two changes to the way the network runs:

Users will no longer be able to upload / play music. I always liked this feature, but it would take a fair amount of server space so, fair enough.

Video uploading is disabled, but embedding still works. I don't think any of us will even notice the difference here as we mostly embed YouTube clips.

Some of you have mentioned that you'd be happy to chip in to run the place and it was suggested that I set up a PayPal donation link. So I did.

If you look at the top of the screen, you will now see a Donate tab. Roughly speaking, I'd only probably need about 20 people to donate $5 each to break even. Any subsequent donations I'll hold on to for next year.

I'm going to run Google Ads over in the sidebar (previously, these were run by Ning), so I should make about $10 a month based on the times I experimented with running ads myself. Feel free to click on them when the mood hits you. That money will just come back to running CrimeSpace.

We had a great, free run for the last three years and I think it's fair enough to start paying for the service. Plenty of other forums with 2000+ members have to and I think Ning provides a pretty damned good service.

Hopefully you all agree!

CrimeSpace News: Update On Ning Chargestag:crimespace.ning.com,2010-05-13:537324:Topic:2349382010-05-13T23:35:26.564ZDaniel Hatadihttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/danielhatadi

Ning, the company that provides the servers and software that CrimeSpace runs on, is no longer going to be free. Since its launch and since CrimeSpace's launch, Ning has been an advertising supported service, but this is about to change.

Ning, the company that provides the servers and software that CrimeSpace runs on, is no longer going to be free. Since its launch and since CrimeSpace's launch, Ning has been an advertising supported service, but this is about to change.

From http://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/ning-update-rolling-out-full:

As part of this change, we’ll be phasing out our free service. On May 4, 2010, we will share with you all of the details of our new
offering, including features and price points, through a series of blog posts, emails, and conference calls. We recognize that there are many active Ning Networks for teachers, small non-profits, and individuals and it's our goal to have a set of product and pricing options that will
make sense for all of them. For Ning Creators using our free service who
choose to move to another service, we will offer a migration path and time to make that change. We will still continue to allow free trials
and test networks on the Ning Platform.

We look forward to talking to you further on May 4th.

Seeing as we have no idea what the pricing scheme is, I won't be making any decisions until then. They do mention a transition plan so I expect that CrimeSpace will run as normal for the next few months at least.

Just to make it clear, members won't be paying to use CrimeSpace, whatever happens. And I don't plan for CrimeSpace to die a horrible digital death in a ditch somewhere, covered in rotting binary code, with computer techs discussing the amount of electrical lividity as they decide on the time of death either.

For now, all I can say is if the new pricing is sensible I'll keep CrimeSpace going; if not, I'll keep it going while I research other options. Chances are that there will be some sort of affordable option to keep the site on Ning. And, personally, I'd rather do that than have to figure out a nice way to get 2,500+ members to move all their content to another site. It'd be like asking everyone at a warehouse party to move to another location because the cops are on their way.

There's a lot of speculation and great ideas in the other, more dramatically titled thread, but I'd like to keep this info up here so people don't have to go searching through the comments to make sense of what's happening at CrimeSpace.

I'll let everyone know more about what's going on some time after May 4th, allowing for enough time for me to recover from the massive self-medication I will most probably spread out over an entire evening of escapism.

Or maybe after a small glass of scotch...
CrimeSpace Bookstore: Calling All Authorstag:crimespace.ning.com,2010-03-10:537324:Topic:2296422010-03-10T22:51:16.780ZDaniel Hatadihttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/danielhatadi

At the suggestion of one of our members, I have recently put together a CrimeSpace online bookstore. It's built by a little helper
tool at Amazon and as such only features books available there. Many
apologies to independent booksellers, but this is really the only
feasible way for me to put this together.

You can access the bookstore from the Store tab (http://crimespace.ning.com/page/crimespace-bookstore) at the top of any of CrimeSpace's pages. My plan here is to give both
readers and writers an easy way to buy or read about books from
CrimeSpace's members, but I've also added a couple of other sections.

'Essentials' is a list of book recommendations taken from one of
CrimeSpace's early mammoth threads, and the 'Writing' section will be
filled with books I've read myself on the subject of writing crime
fiction, as well as any recommendations.

Of course, the main section is 'Members', which I will most probably
split up alphabetically to make it easier to navigate, as well as
adding a separate section for 'Anthologies'. I've taken the liberty of
trawling through member pages and adding books to the store myself, but
I got pretty damned tired after about a hundred books, so I'm hoping I
can pass that workload on to all the authors out there.

Readers can safely ignore the rest of this message.

What I need from each author who has their work available on Amazon is
their name, book title, and ASIN number. If it's an anthology, don't
worry about the name, I'll sort it by title. Just send me (Daniel
Hatadi, Creator Extraordinaire) a message on CrimeSpace like this, with
'CrimeSpace Bookstore' in the subject heading:

***
Name: Megan Abbott
Title: Bury Me Deep
ASIN: 1416599096
***

The ASIN number will sometimes be included in the Product Details of
your book's Amazon listing, or it may just be the ISBN-10 number in the
same section. Basically, it's the group of ten numbers and/or letters
in the book's URL.

I'd appreciate it if you test the number yourself by adding it to the end of this link and trying it out in a web browser:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/

For the example above, the link would be this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1416599096

Feel free to give me multiple titles, but try not to go overboard by
listing three billion e-book short stories. I'd like to make the
bookstore a fairly level playing field, so I may end up limiting the
number of books per author. For now, I'll leave it up to you as I don't
know exactly what data I'm going to end up with.

Also, remember that CrimeSpace is about crime fiction, not other genres, so only crime fiction will be included in the store.

To be completely transparent about this, any book purchased through the
store will earn me a 4% referral fee. It costs me $US20/month to
control the space on the right for the bookstore sample so I expect to
run it at a loss. If it bugs me too much I'll figure something else
out, but my point is that I don't expect to make money off this and
that's not why I run CrimeSpace anyway. I do it for the love (insert
cheesy wink here).

Feel free to ask me any questions or make suggestions, but don't be
surprised if I take a little while to get back to you. I'll be dealing
with a lot of messages over the next couple of weeks. And don't worry if the store jumps around a little in that period, it'll settle down soon.

Cheers,
