Is There Anything Truly New Out There? - CrimeSpace2024-03-28T11:50:03Zhttps://crimespace.ning.com/forum/topics/537324:Topic:88564?x=1&id=537324%3ATopic%3A88564&feed=yes&xn_auth=noI hope I didn't imply that ev…tag:crimespace.ning.com,2007-11-06:537324:Comment:900812007-11-06T06:25:17.786ZDaniel Hatadihttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/danielhatadi
I hope I didn't imply that everything that wasn't new was bad, that's not what I meant at all. Crime fiction is all still very new to me (only about three years), so I find most books I read to be exciting in some way or other. And most of the time I am made ecstatic by a well written story (THE WINTER OF FRANKIE MACHINE comes to mind).<br />

But sometimes I like something completely different, and I mean way out there. Most of the time I'll eat some bangers and mash quite happily, but every so often, I want a combination Thai banana flower salad drizzled in seaweed oil on a lily pad in the middle of a bowl of shark fin soup.<br />
<br />
So I guess I was just asking if I could get that with crime fiction. I completely agree that wankery is wankery, and experiment for the sake of it is mostly pointless, but it doesn't mean that some people out there shouldn't strive for something new.<br />

I think that's enough buts from me today. :) ROFL! You "man" you!tag:crimespace.ning.com,2007-11-06:537324:Comment:900372007-11-06T03:05:00.025ZRose Mercerhttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/RoseMercer

You know what? I've been reading a "new voice" lately and by about half way through I was thoroughly sick of it. Maybe we do want just that - a good story told well.

Bingo. I saw GONE BABY GONE and MICHAEL CLAYTON over the weekend. Nothing "new" in them, certainly nothing experimental. Just excellent stories, well told, with a unique perspective. Top rate stuff. The problem isn't so much a lack of experimentation and revolutionary development, it's a lack of taking care of business as far as quality goes. Quality will always seek its own direction.

I love Chandler, and I love that essay, but any time someone says that everything's already been done, completely new things spring up to prove them wrong. They are few and far between, but they do happen.

I put up a reply to this with some details on a project came up with, but I took it down. Why? I have to see if it works, and if it doesn't, how I can change it to make it work.<br />

Cryptic, yes, but I just want to say that I am going to try something. I'll get back to you on that in a year or so. :)

A game I used to play with a school buddy was to write a story by taking turns, five lines at a time. I know that Penguin recently started an experiment along the lines of a thousand monkeys typing (ie, lots of internet visitors contributing to a novel).<br />

There are strange, new forms of collaboration already happening. Hopefully at some point, something good will come out of it all.

To add to that, I say that being beautiful and interesting is intensely difficult, but not impossible.
