I've thought for years that Lee's ego was his undoing at Gettysburg, and several times after. He and his men had pulled off what seemed to be impossible so many times, and their love for him was so strong, he came to believe they accomplish whatever he asked, and would do it for him personally, and thus threw away Pickett's division (and other units) on a hopeless assault.
