John; here are some of the thrillers I recently read that I'd recommend: "No Justice" by Darcia Helle, "The Scavengers Daughter" by Mike McIntyre, "No Limit" by Fred Anderson, "Hamelin's Child" by DJ Bennett (this is a crime drama and quite raw & shocking, but a great novel). I also enjoyed "Threat Warning" by Jonathan Gilstrap.

A friend of mine has one called "Sweet Spot". Not so much a thriller, but a fascinating crime/politics thing set in Mexican city with Mexican journalists. pols, cops, etc. SmashWords, Kindle, etc.

I just got send a sort of "slacker mystery" set in Florida that's pretty good, a freebie for Kindle by Don Bruns called "Stuff To Die For".

Yes. I don't see what can be done about it, though. Amazon allows sampling. Besides many trad. pubbed authors also put out a self-pubbed line, myself included. It's "buyer beware" and don't always shoot for the 99 cent novels.

I'm still working the traditional route, despite the time it takes to get published, but I have nothing against self-published authors putting out quality work. I've read some fantastic novels that might never have found an outlet. What I do have an issue with is the release of self-published novels that are poorly written and poorly edited because it casts an unfair negative light on all independent authors.
