I think that's smart. 3 books @ $3 or $4 will make you more than 1 @ $6, $7 or even $8.<br />
Also, I've figured in the eventual pricing of POD books, $7.99 for a print collection and $13-$15 for a print trade paperback.<br />
<br />
Good luck<br />

Thanks, David. Yes, that looks right to me, too. I do have an epic tale, but I broke that into 3 books. :)

Hi I.J.,<br />
Your royalties are based on the price you assign to the book/story. Under $2.99 it is 35% (40% at BN). Pricing is also a very touchy subject among indie e-publishers. I have a bunch of short stories up. I charge .99 for them, none of them are more 8000 words. I have a collection of short stories up, RUNNERS, which includes 5 short stories, and I priced that at $2.99. I have a novel up at $4.99. So, here's my pricing strategy--short stories up to around 10-1200 words: .99, 1200-30-40000…

If I ever write an epic type tale, which I don't see me doing, I might charge $6 or $7 for it.<br />
But, that's just me as I see the value of my work as both a writer and a reader.<br />
Good luck,<br />

That's interesting. I don't think length will be too much of an issue then for me. My stories tend to be fairly long. Thanks, Kevin.

I'm wondering the same thing at the moment. I'm thinking of self-publishing a flash-fiction short, but I'd happily give it away free as it is intended to serve as a prologue to the novel I have on sale through Amazon. Minimum price is 0.99, so 35% royalties. The issue I have is that it will be free on smashwords. So, in good conscience, I'm 'fleshing out' the version intended for amazon and expanding it to justify the difference. Kind of a deluxe version, if you will.

<p>I took a look. It's hard to know what to make of it. He runs the gamut with genre. How well established is he? Does he have novels published? I think you do need to have name-recognition or some past achievements in order to get decent sales.</p>

<p>I do agree about Amazon reviews.</p>

That is a major concern. However, there is also such a thing as cheapening your work. It makes more sense to set a low price only for a certain time.

Michael Bracken had an interesting post on his blog a few months ago. You can read it <a target="_blank" href="http://crimefictionwriter.blogspot.com/2011/05/kindle-reality.html">here</a>. It's about the sobering reality with Kindle sales. I don't think the short story collections tend to sell anywhere near as well as the novels, in general. I also think the most critical component of sales on Amazon is Amazon reviews.

<p>You wouldn't be overcharging. Amazon won't sell anything below 99 cents. It's that or free.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>You're right about the royalty. At .99 to 2.98, it's the 35% royalty. Amazon keeps the majority 65% of the sale.</p>
