Similar to Stuart Macbride, but DARKER?

Hi there Crimespace people. I have just joined here, on the recommendation of a friend from Goodreads.

 I have been a fan of Stuart Macbride's Logan Mcrae since the beginning (Cold Granite), yet I feel the violence and gore in the later novels somewhat dissipated for me.

Could anyone here recommend other authors who write in a similar vein (no pun intended) to the earlier Logan Mcrae books? Darkness, disturbing villains, graphic violence (but not just for the sake of it), etc?

One author who I found slightly similar was Mo Hayder, but I did not enjoy the characters in her books as much as Logan Mcrae and D.I. Steel ;-)

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys and girls.
